Newbie says hi.
« on: April 22, 2013, 02:19:51 PM »
Just thought i'd say hello,
I'm currently working on an S(t)ZR project bike. Which seems to be taking an excruciatingly long time to happen, but hey... keeps me off the streets. ;)

I'd appreciate any advice about setting the carbs up to run on pod filters or hearing from anyone who has dressed an SZR in TZR bodywork, particularly things like does the SZR need the SZR vacuum petrol pump when used with a TZR tank, or is that just necessary to pump the fuel 'up-hill' from the fuel cell on the OE SZR tank?

I have also posted a query about engine mounts in the 'Bike probs' section if anyone feels like wrestling with my 'descriptive powers'  :)

All the best
Ade

Hello and welcome to the Family.

I always thought that the frame of SZR and TZR was quite the same....

Which model TZR are you fitting the engine to ?

Hi Steve and SRX and Colin
Basically i'm just fitting TZR125RR Belgarda bodywork to the SZR (the SZR is a modded TZR frame, Italian company Belgarda built the TZR125RR and the SZR under licence from Yam, they share lots of the same kit). Well that was the plan, but first I thought I might fit a better exhaust, oh look the exhaust stud has broke, thats engine out then... well i might as well blast and paint the frame... might as well strip and re-valve the suspension... and so it goes...
After a year apart I've just put the engine back into the frame, and am starting to see if I can set the bike up with the TZR bodywork, which pretty much fits. The major thing is that to fit the TZR rear subframe and tank I will have to ditch the standard airbox and run K'n'Ns, I know singles can be hard to set up, so i was wondering if anyone had a big single (pref Yam/660) running on pod filters that could give me any advice.

Hi, I have a 660 Skorpion with pods (K&N-alikes).  Runs great, and is simpler and cleaner looking.  However, it has a Hi compression Arias piton (standard size), and a slipstream fettled head (standard valves and cam, as I remeber, for sure the valves are std).  Dynojet kit fitted.  Standard headers, with a renegade can.

When I bought it (7+ years ago) it had 50 rwhp.  Maybe not quite got that now, but it feels ok.  Not used in anger anyway!

The problem was getting the two pods close enough together, they needed a bit of persuasion (ie. mashing!) but they work ok.

Cheers, sounds like a really nice project!

Hi Andy,
Thanks for that, I have had tales of doom about setting singles up, but if I could get around 50 bhp I'd be chuffed with that. I've had slipstream rejet the carbs for race headers and pod filters, but i'm presuming that until its been on the dyno that is going to be at best approximate.
The other bit of info you might be able to supply me with is does your 660 use a fuel pump (the SZR has a diaphragm type, but its a funny shaped tank, with a fuel cell that sits quite low in relation to the carbs)? or does it just gravity feed from the tank?

Regards

Why not give it to slipstream once its built?  I dont think it would take them more than an hour on the dyno, they know their stuff.  Remember it was only 48 horses or so book value to start with, so 50 is plenty.  However, MArtin Sweet/ Slipstream will know what jets are right for you from your spec, so even on paper its probably not far off.  Suck it and see first I'd say.

The MZ did originally use the fuel pump (as supplied with the xtz engine).  But all of the tank is above the carbs (same as the SZR?  Not sure...), so I just removed it and went with gravity feed.  No problems at all.  I think the pump was necessary for the pannier style tank on the XTZ.  MZ certainly didn't remove it.  I would think (for a first few runs anyway) a good head of petrol will be sufficient.

If you remove it, remember to block off the vacuum pipe to carbs...  I seem to remember that had me confused for a while....!! ;D

Good luck.  Any photos?  Where are you based?

Cheers

Thats priceless info mate, I'm going to run it with a TZR tank and that is well above the carbs so if I don't need a fuel pump thats great, (one less thing to worry about where to mount it)

I'll post some pics soon, but I've just got the engine back in so there's not much to see yet. I'll definitely get some set-up time with Slipstream.

I'm based in Kettering

Here she is before I got the engine back in. I've got a full set of  (quite manky) TZR bodywork to fit.
