SZR query
« on: June 02, 2010, 09:26:25 AM »
A chum of mine was asking about what bike he could buy to take out for a scratch on Sunday mornings without being mentally fast (like most of his other bikes). I suggested an SZR660. I told him that if he could ignore the awful seat unit and the measly power output (compared to his R1 and VFR800) he would find it to be a great handling bike.

He took me at my word and bought one this week. He's awaiting delivery and has turned his attention to tuning the lump. His homework so far suggests that huge increases in power can be obtained but at huge cost and reduced reliability. What he can't find on the 'net is how to mildly tune the engine without going mad.

Any thoughts?

It has to be said that the SZR is at the moment a blinding bargain, sub 20k models turn up all the time for £800(ish) and it's a fantastic bike for hooning around on.

Silencer change, re-jet and change filter(s), maybe swap to twin flatslides.

Spend the money on tyres and just thrash it within an inch of its life. Anything else, except a silencer swap, will involve surgery, cost and time.

why does he want to tune it then? surely tuning it will just make it peaky and less flexible, which is precisely the opposite of what he claimed to want it for. tell him to flog it and repaint his r1 or something. whats the point of getting a sweet handling bike as an alternative to a fast sports bike. and then trying to make it go faster. surely as a lesson in missing the point its priceless, especially as, reading your post, he hasnt even taken delivery of it yet. people are strange!!

Point taken, I was surprised he wanted to tune it too, but he's been in the motorcycle business for over 20 years so I'm guessing he knows what he wants.

I seem to remember when the SZR was launched and performance bikes really slated it. Now, I would like to know where these £800 bikes are as I could quite get used to something like that! I would be happy to use 'as is' without tuning other than a sexy pair of tyres....

I was looking at spares prices for my MT-03 and a fuel pump costs circa £200 and I sometimes feel scared to use the bike in case it breaks down and I wont be able to afford its repairs. It is also rotting away before my eyes to my utter disgust. Methinks it's days in my stable may be numbered. Just need to finish fixing the SRX again, hmm.

There was an £800 SZR advertised in the freebie 'Motorcycle Monthly' this month, with 10k on the clock.
