Pull the plug out.....with a pencil down the hole, SLOWLY turn the engine over when the pencil stops going up = tdc (don't drop pencil down plug 'ole) if you are looking for compression stroke (which is every other tdc) then, with the tappet covers removed it'll be the tdc with all valves closed (should feel a little play on the tappets, clearance is...if i remember correctly inlet 2 to 4 thou, exhaust 4 to 6 thou ( set mine at 3 and 5)
