Suzuki DR350
« on: November 12, 2009, 04:37:13 PM »
My son has just purchased a 1991 DR350 fitted with a later electric start engine. As it needs a new chain and sprocket set do I buy one for a 1991 model or a later one to match the engine. One dealer tells me the front sprocket was the same for all model years and another one tells me I need to go by engine number.
As the bike will be used daily to ride 20 miles into Bristol what gearing do you suggest.
Apart from ebay, whats the best place to get spares.

Any Info greatly received.

On a separate issue, I commute 100 miles a day by Yam XJ900 but after playing on the DR Im considering going back to single cylinder bikes for the first time since the 70s. It was such fun! Are their any singles that could take this level of abuse? Fast A roads from Chippenham to Reading.

Looked up the sprockets over at WEMoto - Click Me - the 91-93 model is listed as 14/43, later ones are 15/43.  The later rear sprockets have a different spacing across the centre, judging by the drawings they have, fronts are the same.  If it feels stressed then I'd be looking at one or two more teeth on the front - you'll get more relaxed cruising and the loss of 'off the line' acceleration will be hardly noticeable.

As for a thumper commuter, pretty much any middleweight thumper can hack it - the choice is down to you and your preferred style - sit up 'n' beg on a trailie, down'n'dirty on an XBR/SRX or something in between like an Enfield/SR/GN.  Me?  For a daily commuter I would pick the sack o' tatties riding position on an Enfield/SR etc. - although Wee Arfur the XBR is pretty nifty and comfy enough on a run, and Miss Whiplash my old 650 Dominator could hold masterclasses in traffic filtering ..... decisions, decisions!

You're welcome

50 miles each way and you'll want at least a 500 unless you have a lot of patience, at least on a big single you should see 50-60mpg instead of 30-50mpg, unless you are really cracking on  ;)
I run an MZ Traveller (660 yam motor) on the daily commute and it's pretty good at normal legal speeds. Enjoying it so far  ;D

I used to have a DR350SE and while I thought it was a good bike I'd still not want to commute 50 miles each way on one, unless it was mostly in urban areas.
