Simon's DR650, Gareth's rebuild
« on: November 01, 2009, 08:35:25 PM »
My brother Gareth is rebuilding Simon Morgan's old DR650.

Here are some piccues to illustrate why he's decided to strip it:

Here a picture of the stage he has got to:

It's not doom and gloom, he knew the bike had led a hard life in the ten years of Simon's ownership (virtually every mile covered on salted roads) and he anticipated getting the frame repaired and painted.

Cheers

Not too bad that will clean up nicely, the salt is the killer. good luck to him.

If you are going to get the frame powder coated make sure it has been degreased beforehand....the shotblast used WONT take grease or oil off.  ::)

I finally got to see the dismantled bike the other day. Gareth has it split into various piles. One is for powdercoating, another for cleaning and polishing, etc.

He had a real tussle getting the rear suspension linkage apart, but it's all off now and he's awaiting the delivery of a new bearing kit for it.

The engine is being passed over to a local mechanic, Dick Jones, for examination and repair.

The engine is at the mechanic's workshop and he says he might start it tomorrow!

And yes, it did leak oil all over Gareth's car boot  ::)
