Mid week topic: does E-bay stop you upgrading?
« on: November 18, 2008, 04:51:40 PM »
The Bonneville is now getting towards five years old and has worn out a few bits and bobs. As a result I've trawled E-bay and bought a pair of silencers, a new coil and a complete front brake system (only wanted the pins, but cheaper to buy the lot). Trawling through today I see another pair of silencers for a tenner and a pair of shocks for the same. These are all 1000-mile items that people have taken off bikes and replaced with aftermarket versions that are supposed to be better.

To me then there are two levels of bike out there. There are the spenders whose bikes have the sports exhaust, IKON Shocks, King and Queen seat and so on, and the tight wads like myself running near standard bikes on other peoples cast off's.

As a mean Yorkshireman I just can't bring myself to spend £160 on new shocks when I could have something like forty years worth off e-bay. Am I just tight and lacking understanding of finer points, or are there a lot of people with more money than sense and not enough patience to even wear out one set before replacing? Think I might claim to be green, a sort of biking Womble  :-\

BTW, I do have the K&Q seat. There is one of those on E-bay sat at over £100, while someone was selling the standard one for £15. My standard one is on the shelf in the garage for the day when the bike might get traded to a dealer. If it won't fit the new bike I'm better off with the £100 than some dealer who won't add a tenner on the trade in. I guess the guy selling for £15 must lack space on a shelf?

My choice of the CB500 as my new chair bike was made partly because of the amount of cheap bits available on Ebay.

I wanted a new lower frame rail (the CB has a removable engine cradle rail) so that I could weld sidecar mounts to it. A nice example on Ebay cost me £7.99. I'm guessing that's a £100+ part from Mr Honda. I didn't have to hunt for it either, there were three on at the same time.

Another thing is that I might drastically reduce the amount of XBR spares I've got hoarded away. With Ebay I will probably have lots of opportunity to source cheap parts as required for years to come.

Cheers

when the petrol tap went on the cbr mr honda wanted £120, yep one twenty!

found one on e-bay and got it for £3, the man refused to take my £3 saying he just didn't want to throw it out when it could be of use to someone.

there seems to be a fair bit on there by people like us who just can't face binning parts that someone out there might need, its a fairly efficient form of recycling.
