On some jobs I see a couple of notes tucked up on the mantlepiece, etc. I often wonder if they are planted there for that purpose.
I've seen what dishonesty can lead to and I would never stoop to taking money that wasn't mine. On a recent job there was a 50p piece in the middle of the floor and it was still there when I finished two days later. 50p might just be loose change, but taking it could cost me the trust of my customer.
I was talking to a house clearance bloke recently and he said that the best he's done from an old book is £9,500! He also said that he often finds large sums of money tucked away in items of furniture; £12,000 under a mattress, £4,500 down the side of a cabinet. I asked him if he ever returned the money to the owner's family. He said that after 20 years of dealing with 'greiving' relatives and their scheming ways, he wouldn't even consider returning a penny. His choice I guess.
