new exhaust for my szr ?!
« on: July 06, 2007, 10:21:00 AM »
i was thinking of a "Bos" exhaust for my szr, i heard that it's not that expensive compared to "Akrapovic" or "Arrow".

but my question is - a custom exhaust does it really gives you extra horsepower or it's just for the sound?!

please let me know what do you think of "Bos", in general!

Hello mate,

I'm no expert, but I am quite ignorant of "Bos".  tho I looked online quickly, and they seem quite comprehensive.  Do they do a "bolt on" rplacement for a stock SZR system??

I'd not expect any real increased power from a can alone.  I'd be surpruised if you got more than 1 bhp.  This equates to about 2 or 3%.  You could probably get the same by pumping up the tyres and lubing the chain!!

They may well be a fair bit lighter than stock tho.

And the better sound will give the perception of more power.

And its trick!  So if it makes you happy, go for it.  But don't piss your neighbours off (singles with race cans are LOUD), and make sure its what you want before shelling out 2 or 3 hundred quid.

Ask steffan about his experiences of an aftermarket can on his Skorpion  (same engine as the szr).  He's fallen back in love!

cheers,

a

Hi Uncle,

I put a Quill can and link pipe on mine. With the dyno-jet kit fitted by the previous owner this is reckoned to give around 3bhp increase. Not much, but the new can looks loads better, sounds a lot better and weighs a lot less than the standard dustbin. My advice is go for it. ask the SZR forum guys in Yahoo about Bos, I'm sure one of the continental guys has one fitted to his SZR.

Cheers,

Mav.

Why not dyno the bike as it is now, costs about £25 so you know how the bike is performing.
Then as you modify it check it out on the dyno the lads running it will probably help to set up the jets, filters etc to get the most out of the exhaust etc. Also exhausts and mods etc effect the torque curve which can be just as important as increasing bhp. the dyno will show any changes. I think that increased exhaust length brings down the torque curve giving better low down power conversely shorter exhausts raise it but help the power higher up.
No doubt i will now be shot down in flames by all the learnered members who know far more than me.
Thinking back when i was tuning series a engines the difficulty in the length and fitting under a mini was always a problem.

Remember 1bhp  increase on a 180 bhp machine is not noticeable but on a 40- 50 bhp machine is it may well be. changing to an iridium plug gave my srx nearly 1bhp improvement 4 or 5 mods like that certainly  adds up.

We all get Heavier as we get Older because there is a lot more information in our heads

I fitted a Renegade with a DB killer to make it legal to my Skorpion. It certainly transformed the bike. Part of it I think is just being able to hear the exhaust note in synch with the engine, but I fancy that she is more punchy and cleaner on the throttle than before. The folk at Renegade said that upjetting wouldn't be required and they were right (well so far) I think the bike runs better than it did. The net result is that I have now moved the pegs up a notch and fixed the rear brake that had been playing up for ages and I am using the bike a lot more. Ask Richard Marshall, he knew the bike before and having ridden it since came back giggling something about hooligan machine with the way it performed.

Many years ago when GC was still a boy and the Wright Brothers were big news, Performance Bikes tried setting up the exhaust on MFs Rotax racer.  Starting with a pipe about 60 inches long they pulled it on the dyno and then cut a bit off the pipe etc etc until they ended up with a really short stub.  This showed a pattern where at some lehgths the pipe would not let the bike hold a steady throttle - was really buggering things up, and at others it pulled fine.  They found that there was one length of pipe that gave maximum power and another that gave the greatest range.  Just for a laugh they tried one pipe of each length, one on each port, and found that it made nearly as much power as the max power length and nearly as greater breadth as the best for that.  There something like 20 inches difference in the two pipes, making it real interesting to run into one silencer.  I guess a dyno and a sliding section of pipe would allow the length of pipe to be tuned for your bike.

Gordon the SZR supermono has different length headers, so that the pulse doesn't all arrive at once...

Look at:    www.no1bloke.blogspot.com and look at the earlier posts.

Or this may work:

You know, you could enter to win him- that exhaust has got to be worth £60??!  :-)

I would, but I need aircooled!
