stumbled across this
love the mixture of machinery and seeing them being given the berries :)
-
Many thanks, great stuff.

great stuff but many of the manx and matchless singles arent more than a couple of years old, theyre remanufactured with modern materials and clearances, nikasil liners, 4 valve heads electronics etc theey look and sound great, but my wiofes suzuki is older than any of them.
-
True, but they still sound good!
I suppose competitive racers will always use whatever they can to get an advantage.

I think they are brilliant and love the sound and smell when I go to watch the vintage racing. My son who is a classic car man and I often debate whether the Walmsleys, Summerfields etc are more appropriately racing in a silhouette class where it is the form that matters rather than the exact age. We always come to the conclusion that we don't really care as the old style bikes are just so much better to watch than the modern stuff.
To be fair if I were racing at 100mph plus I would want to know that 60 year old magnesium crankcases weren't going to let go in a big way!

well yes i agree, but the issue i have is with bikes that are competing in a classic class that are built to a spec that wasnt available in the period they represent. on one level of racing folks ar blatting round tracks on 1980's superbikes where thee regs say that they cant have more modern brakes and suspension because its not authentic to the era, and then you have 500cc+ 'manx' nortons running 4 valve heads and nikasil liners, modern electronic ignition, superlight slipper pistons and titanium valves and retainers, that rev to over 10 thousand rpm and make over 70bhp, thy externally resemble manx's of the period, but their new crankcases are built to modern spec with extra bracing, theyve got better cooling, the exhaust ports and inlets are at different angles and sizes to the ones they purport to be, lob in close ratio boxes with 6 or 7 gears, etc etc. now dont get me wrong, im not a luddite, the technology that has allowed these bikes to be built is incredible and im in some awe of it, but lets have some perspective if theyre going to be put out against authentic period bikes.

Yes I have to say I'm with John on this one. As he says, absolutely no getting away from the fact these are fantastic machines but again as John also says you have to have some perspective. Which doesn't seem to be there. ... cheers, Michael

Yep, I agree with John and Michael. It may be a worthwhile spectacle seeing these bikes race, but it's not 'classic' racing IMHO.
-
I agree and that is why they should race in a silhouette class and leave the Rudges, Triumphs etc to race in a genuine period class.
