Title: new,new,new....
Post by: spooky on September 12, 2019, 05:09:32 PM
After looking at and almost buying a few Bullets/classic efi`s today i bit the bullet and ordered a new one !!   I won`t get it until end of the month, I have bought it from dealer in Dumfries.  (probably not the one in the picture, but it might be)

Nice one Rufus, looks lovely. I want to change my zorst too, so I will be watching this thread to see what`s suggested. I do believe though, that Hitch ocks zorsts discolour quickly (no experience, just what I heard) I was talking to a visitor MGP week who had a nice sounding pipe on his. He got it from Fecked . com for £80.

Again, nice one Rufus  ;) ;)

No... it's not like yours, spookys is standard, there's nothing quite like "Norman " 😁😁😉

I didn't wait at all to hear the glorious tones of a de restricted silencer. I had the dealer fit it ready for collection. I made a nicer looking bracket once I had a spare hour or two. The one I have is the hitchcocks Goldie pattern. Sounds lovely and rich. I had the end battle out as soon as I got home. The bike runs great with lots of low down torque. There is an issue with regards to the chrome, which is turning kind of "milky". Can't always see it. Depend how the light catches it. But I can say that I'm very happy in terms of noise quality and general running.

I'd talk to hitchcocks about what else they recommend with the euro 4, unless you just take a punt on whatever you fancy.

I've modified the rear end, rotating the rear guard forwards and making a smaller seat mounted rear light. Also a homemade mount for a single bar end mirror and a home made mount for a hip flask chain oiler.

Issues so far have been binning a duff chain after only 1000 miles, a leaking and failed battery after 3000 miles and a faulty ferrule where the evap tube joins onto the injector body. All rectified myself.

Ha ha. He is rather handsome.

Yes long stroke, low rpm  proper thumpers. Unique on the new bike market I imagine. I can't think of any other bike that you can buy new which will take you back in time to the degree this one does, offering the simple pleasures. Being so genuinely old fashioned comes with limitations, which you either embrace as part of the experience or not.

The wait until October the 1st is killing me.. If the bike is ready and waiting to go I may have to get it taxed for september and collect it sooner !  spoke to hitchpeople about exhausts, the one i like may/may not fit, he`s not sure about the brackets, so at first i will stick with the standard one and might try one from india later, or should i just go for one i know will work/fit but not the style i want  and see if dealer is happy to fit it?  decisions.

Heck yeah. You only live once.

Regarding what you like in exhaust style. I had a thought, which would cost more but potentially give you the style you want and run well. Could you use the down pipe section from the new so called trials version and stick a free flowing silencer on the end. This way you'd (theoretically) get a good fitting down pipe, with the lambda sensor in the right place. ?. Might be worth putting it to hitchcocks and see if they agree.

I can think of one other Andrew, a Jawa. Long stroke engine designed in the late 40's, last updated in the 80's when they changed the barrel from iron to alloy. Four, yes four speed gearbox and a single carb, none of your fancy catalytic converters and EFI here thank you very much. Basically, a 1950's bike with a disc brake and electric start...

Ay up Pete. Hope you're still doing well. I guess your recovery is pretty much complete by now.

You'll notice I said bikes available to buy new 😁. Surely the jawa wouldn't get past euro 4. I have to admit to knowing nothing about it though. I stopped buying magazines probably 6 to 8 years ago as they were becoming repetitive and a waste of money. The downside is I have very little clue as to what is new on the market, except Enfield cos I follow their Facebook output.

Post a link to the jawa please, I'd  like to have a goosey.

Cheers Pete.

Cheers Pete.

Personally I much prefer the look of the classic 500 Enfield. The jawa doesn't look like what one might say is a long stroke engine. That said, I'm sure it is basic motorcycling, which was your point. Probably even more basic than the Enfield in one sense.

Just been giving Norman the once over (oo er) after a five week lay up. Noticed something you'd have to be careful of with an upswept  silencer. There is a welded on rear footrest bracket which juts out. I don't know whether the new so called trials version has these or not?

I am collecting the bike saturday lunchtime, i have decided to leave standard silencer on until it has its first service, i may just go for the hitchpeoples offering. Have you disconnected the wiring to stop headlight coming on when electric start is used ?  and the side stand cut out, that sounds like a nuisance

Yep, very excited, l have only ever had two brand new bikes, a 350 Jawa in 1973 and 250 CZ in 1981.  I will probably come home via Annan/Gretna/Brampton/chollerford then down A68.     ;D

I never use the electric start because it's such a good starter on the lever. No real effort required. Headlight and side stand switch left alone. In years to come I dare say the wiring on Norman will be rationalized. The electric starter motor is being removed this winter.

well I had a really nice ride home, 130 miles and the bike is smashing ! everything I hoped for apart from an oil leak !  The rubber grommet beside the filler cap started weeping, haven`t had time to investigate as when I got home there was a chap interested in the savage , he bought it but it was getting dark so couldn`t look at it properly. I think it might be the pressure switch ?

Nice one Rufus. Yeah I saw you pop up on the RE Facebook group.

Rubber grommet? Next to the petrol filler? I ain't got a rubber grommet so I'm not sure what you mean. There's a small drain hole next to the filler cap. Is yours the screw off type cap?
Title: Re: new,new,new....
Post by: spooky on September 21, 2019, 07:48:11 PM
Sorry, i meant next to  the oil filler cap... lots of oil escaping.
Title: Re: new,new,new....
Post by: Propellor on September 21, 2019, 07:56:56 PM
Right next to the oil filler cap is what I take to be the main alternator output wires. Oil should definitely not be coming out. I'd check your oil level first job mate. More likely is that they got a lot spilled onto the top of the cases when filling? But I'd take nothing for granted!

Thanks, I have sent a video to dealer , see what he says, is the grommet a tight fit  on yours ?

Yes and perfectly oil tight. It is positioned too close to the filler cap. Possibly early incarnations had a shorter starter motor allowing the harness to run a different route. Hamfisted use of the filler cap could dislodge it. But first I'd check the oil level and satisfy yourself that it's not just residue on the top.

Book says 300 but dealers suggest around 500 miles. I went to 500 miles. It's an oil and filter change and a supposed general check. Tappets hydraulic and maintenance free.

Bandits at three o`clock Algy......

I had a short 30 mile ride,  halfway round I stopped at home and tightened the filler cap a lot more, then tightened up all the case studs, got a quarter turn on all of them easily but will let dealer torque them on friday when i go back, but it has improved a lot, much less oil about, but the rubber grommet is not sealing properly, anyway,  It`s Great !!!!

Oil leak fixed, took it up to Holywood Service Station RE dealer for first service, he took casing off and refitted the rubber seal and now all is ok, love the bike, it was a 240 mile round trip and I managed good weather all day, plus a really nice bacon sandwich at the Riverside cafe at Chollerford !

yep, I asked  dealer if he could get  the silencer shown on the official RE website, on a battle green classic.   it`s the type I want that I can get from hitchpeople but at great expense, hopefully one from RE /India may be cheaper.  we`ll see.

Really pleased for you and a little jealous....
When my uncle recently announced his retirement from biking, I selfishly urged him to swap his fast Ducati for one of these and even quoted from Prop's earlier post. A great pity he didn't go for it and instead bought an MGB for his trip down memory lane.
I'd be pleased to read more posts on your recent acquisition 👍

Before I decided on getting a Royal Enfield I looked at all sorts of other bikes, but i kept going back to it. Lots of stuff i read said they vibrate badly, now that I have ridden it I am beginning to think that the vibration reports are down to people just not being used to bikes that vibrate, it`s really no worse than lots of bikes I have had and have still got. My little gilera is worse, the savage was about the same, my v50 guzzi was no better.  Harley Sportsters that I had (for 30 + years) all vibrated as much as the Enfield, I am running it in by `feel` revving it quite a lot in middle gears, not letting it labour and doing lots of unnecessary gear changes and in 500 miles I have felt it getting smoother. It`s easily as quick and more flexible than the 400 savage and has almost the same vibes. I think it is going to be a really pleasant and quick bike.  Things I don`t like at present are :  the back brake, it is a bit vague but probably still bedding in, never had a new rear disc braked bike to compare it with.    errr.   I think that`s it !
I took off the back seat mount and replaced it with a nice rear carrier (for my waterproofs) I may try a lower seat, at 5` 5" and a bit I can`t quite get both feet flat on the floor.I like the fact that I can cover a couple of hundred miles before having to fill up as well, I can get to Dumfries and back before fuel light comes on.    Wish I could post photos like I used to, not sure what`s gone wrong, I think my phone has changed it`s settings ?

Now that you're racking the miles up I'd be keeping an eye on the chain. Check for seized or stiff links manifesting as extreme tight/slack in the chain tension  👍

Well I am very jealous. As you may have read I did a great job in killing the Mighty Enfield by trying to rationalise the wiring (careful of that one Andy) without first understanding how unconventional and strange Indian wiring is. The upshot being TME still dead and without a significant injection of cash for a new wiring loom and possibly an ECU will remain so.

Reading your posts about enjoying your Enfields has made me more determined than ever to resurrect TME even though I keep threatening to sell it as an unfinished project. Somehow I just can't seem to part with it. I am waiting for a response from Electrex World about whether one of their universal CDI ignition kits can be adapted (TME has a carburettor conversion so doesn't really need an ECU controlled system) so fingers crossed.

One way or another I will be re-joining you out there in Enfield Land some day, but until then enjoy them and don't be as silly as me.

This one a bit left field.

Convert it fully to points and condenser and mechanical adv/ret. Site it where the starter motor is?

Having gone so far with your wiring I'd be inclined to take it back to the alternator output and start again! We all know how everything works, with the exception of the ecu circuit.
.....???

Edit. I assume you keep the ecu with the carb to control adv/ret?
