Title: 2004 BMW 650GS
Post by: manxie on May 06, 2019, 03:16:53 PM
Hi folks. I know some club members own or have owned a 650 BMW. I`ve been offered one, someone wants to swap it for my GPz750. What are your thoughts on the 650 and is there anything to look out for? It`s 2004 with 13.5k miles. Thank you  ;)

all i know is, the first engines were badged rotax, then they built their own, both engines were considered very robust and local guys here tuned them very successfully to compete in the super mono race series.

The earlier ones had issues with voltage regulators, dropping out of 2nd hear and water pump impeller seals leaking. I think all of these issues were well and truly sorted by 2004 which just leaves a bit of an issue with the headset bearings running dry due to grease being melted by the warm engine oil carried in the frame. I'm not sure I ever believed this to be true, as plenty of other bikes carry their oil in the top frame tube with no problem - I think it far more likely that the factory were a bit tight fisted when applying the grease in the first place. An easily remedied problem in any event.

I had a 2000 carbed model and it was a nice bike.
