Good article. I didn't know about lots of those things.

What a coincidence - I was actually at this event on Thursday morning representing our club, The Thirty Motorcycle Club, which Rex had been a member of. Although he died before I joined in the mid 1990s a few of our current members knew him and by all accounts he was quite a character as evidenced by some of the speeches at the event. Towards the end of his life he was particularly proud of his Blackberry wine which he is alleged to have produced 300 gallons a year!
I managed to find the attached short film from Goodwood a few years back featuring one of his race cars. Also featured is his "Mule", which seemed to be a very clever design - unfortunately it didn't proceed due to a disagreement between him and Harry Ferguson - not surprising as they could both be very "thran" as we say in this neck of the woods. Some have suggested that the Mule is quite similar in concept to the quad bike. He favoured simplicity and lightness.
To celebrate the millennium our club commissioned a plaque celebrating his achievements and those of racer Artie Bell. I think only 100 were produced.
Regards
Tony

"thran" meaning awkward and belligerent! ;)

Any similarity to Tony is purely coincidental.
