Bugger, I always get it wrong. No wonder I was thrown out of my conversational French night class they couldn't hear me over the mighty Enfield's exhaust.

I've been busy buying a moto guzzi v7 off Martin (xbally) , finally got round to taxing and insuring it today, off out tomorrow for my first spin. .... don't worry, don't worry I've not deserted the fold, still got the ktm (for now at least) and still got the XBR tracker project on the bench 🔧🛠⚙️

Notching up the miles on the Enfield. 2500 so far.

Really enjoying the bike. We all know they're not fast, but if you're in the Enfield frame of mind, very enjoyable.

Couple of issues to date. A plastic ferrule on the injector body which connects to a tube from the evap canister fell off due to being badly glued. Dispensed with it and attached the hose firmly with a stainless hose clamp. Easy solved.

It has become apparent that the chain, which is an o ring type, is wearing uneven due to lack of grease in the bushes. This problem was pointed out by someone on the royal enfield owners uk Facebook site. Needs replacing with a reputable brand.

I notice Bill has been keeping the flag flying - how are you Bill? Well I hope. Hope you got the choke lever sorted.

Cheers all.

Ian, did you "do" the lakes on your Enfield?
Title: Re: Quiet here?
Post by: Smithy on September 29, 2018, 07:46:13 AM
Glad you're enjoying the beige beastie. It seems the OEM chains on Enfields are crap anyway, my original one was as loose as knicker elastic in 6000 miles and was replaced with a Renolds one from Hitchcocks. That only lasted 7000 miles so I bought an Elite one from Hitchcocks.

It was in fitting this one that I realised the snail cam adjusters are miles out and the chains were running out of line when I set them both equally! Hopefully this chain will last a little longer now that the wheel is properly aligned. Shouldn't be a problem for you cos you've got the new adjusters.

Yes I was on the mighty Enfield and it performed faultlessly. I went south-west this time to Haverigg and then explored Coniston, Millom, Wasdale Head etc. Stunning part of the Lakes I've not previously been to but I will be back as they say. Covered about 1000 miles in the 4 days I was away.

Ian, sounds like a great trip. It's a beautiful part of England for sure.

Regarding wheel alignment, I ignore the marks on the adjusters and use a long ally rectangular hollow section to align the wheels. Can be a pain but well worth the effort. Besides, a decent quality o ring/x ring chain doesn't need adjusting that often. Same for a standard chain if it's kept constantly lubricated, especially into the bushes. The OE chain fitted to the latest models is an o ring type but it appears not to contain much grease!! A guy on the RE owners site had issues and upon splitting the links found the pin/bush area behind the o rings devoid of grease. The o rings had successfully kept water out (proving their worth) but the metal surfaces were totally dry and hence the joints stiff. Looking closely at mine from the outside, some links are keeping a set angle so they're obviously dry inside. Wear is happening unevenly causing pronounced slack/tight spots. It needs swapping. I'm keeping the outside of the rollers well clean and lub'd to avoid sprocket wear. I've caught it early thankfully.

A reputable brand x ring chain can be bought for around 50 quid so ill be replacing it next month.

Chain being a pain.... buy a shaftie you'll have the last laughy 😀

My Enfield OE chain snapped. Bin the POS before it kills you.

https://sites.google.com/site/hrpvindaloomotorcycles/home/news-and-announcements/chain-failure (https://sites.google.com/site/hrpvindaloomotorcycles/home/news-and-announcements/chain-failure)

The Reynolds is rubbish, typical non-O-ring old school thing that needs boiling in whale blubber every fortnight, but they stretch rather than snap.

A DID unfortunately won't fit, the Indian garbage is a funny size and the oil bath outboard of the chain is a restriction on width.

The set up on the new bikes is different, the rear end anyhow, as it has disc brakes. The way the sprocket attaches is more like a jap bike. I've tracked the chain size to a 530 using the hitchcocqe part no. I'll get the vernier on the job, although two guys on the RE O uk site have verified personal use of 530 DID.

Just seen this thread! As Michael has commented ,he's bought my Guzzi V7 which was a reluctant sale. I just fancied a change and have bought a 2015 KTM 690 Duke.Things have not started well however as after going to work on it for most of last week it developed a bad misfire, popping through the exhaust and would not run right at all or tick over! It's being collected in a van tomorrow (hopefully) by the supplying dealer. I'm suspecting the battery at the moment but it could be anything.

Aye, I wouldn't expect you to remember that in a hurry! Penpont, is the spot you are looking for and we have just turned off the A702 Moniave - Thornhill road onto the un-classified road that goes nor'west of Drumlanrig to the A76 and Sanquhar, from where we went back over the top to Crawfordjohn and Abington services where we went our separate ways. That was a good run.  ;D

Yes, hopefully see some of you folks at Stafford. In the last few months my life has had quite a few major changes, and the bikes, and unfortunately the TC forum, have taken a back seat. My current bikes are an Armstrong MT500, which is giving problems. The 660 Tenere which Ive been fettling at very occasionally, my spare Dommie, and the trusty red Dommie, which is my everyday transport and looking rough as hell! The bikes are all in a small yard at the rear of my house, and completely open to the elements, but hopefully I will have constructed a shelter for them this week  :)

Yes mate we've all been there st some point or another, the bikes just have to kind of take a bit of a back seat for whatever reason. Anyway good to have you back on the old keyboard, best o luck with the shelter 👍

Ta.

The sprocket is inside the oil bath in which the alternator fit (you have to drain the oil to change the sprocket). The gap between oil filled cover and true engine case is too narrow for any O-ring chain except the OEM POS. A non-O-ring is fine but you are back to boiling in blubber every other trip.

That bumb above the kick start shafts has a back on it and the space is full.

The cover to let the oil out uses five different sizes of bolt, hence the cat biscuit box used to make sure they stayed in order.

A truly stupid design.

Well i had a call from the supplying main dealer. I didn't catch everything that was said-problems with my mobile - but i think the gist is some problem with the fuel supply-could be a blockage or the pump? I think they said they may have to get some parts and would be back working on it tomorrow (Thursday). I'll let you know as soon as i hear further Andrew.

By the way i think i've sold my XBR project to a guy from Scotland who has several already!

Ian
[/quote]

The exact opposite. Sort of.

Give me a well running Bullet on a sunny Sunday morning and I love it. The torque, the lightness,  the involvement of using 99% of the performance, the reaction non-bike people give to something that looks and sounds like a proper bike, instead of a snot green road missile,  the design features that should be on every bike like the EFI blink code.

Then, the ***ing things frustrate me. The cheese like materials. The obvious design flaws (stupid nacelle headlight so you can annoy helicopters while crashing in the dark etc.). The history that gives every anorak the right to lecture you about how they are made in India out of toffee and aren't the real thing, or hand out advice on greasing the S cams on your front disc. The slackness of the entire organisation (they don't know their own part number for a TPS when sent a photo of the box and don't have any parts for new bikes). The endless special paint jobs from a company that needs to start using tyres developed this century.

I want Honda to make one.

Hi Andy

Sorry I obviously mis-interpreted your original comments. I have to say I entirely agree with your summary of the bikes and also with everything you point out as a downside.

I would really love to get a sticker printed for mine that says 'Please don't ask me if it is a proper Enfield'.

I sat at a layby tea stop a few weeks ago with my bike when a chap came in on another near identical Enfield. He proceeded to tell me all about it despite me pointing to mine and saying several times that I knew what he was talking about because the one next to his was mine!

Some people are so full of themselves that they can't see anybody else.

OMG they getting worse are they?  :)

I had a lady who must have been 90 tell me she rode one in the ATS. Then she corrected herself and said it was a Triumph. You enjoy those conversations. She didn't take me up on the offer to give it a run round the block.

The only Bullet rider I got fed up with was a guy going on about fitting a carb. My "keep the FI" answer was apparently wrong.

It's normally like going to the clinic with fellow sufferers. Does yours make this noise, have you put loctite on this etc.

Definitely get the sticker, its more polite than the one I planned!

If you can keep the frustrating bits under control, enjoy it.

This was a good day

Re the Sticker thing...

When I owned both a '59 Triton, and a smashed T140 being slowly returned from the dead, 20 years ago, I also had a 250 Superdream.

I painted over the logos and sprayed the sidepanels black. Then I put Triumph decals on, carefully modified with a razor to read TLIUMPH (because of the lazy stereotype of Japanese folk struggling to differentuate R/L, and it's a Japanese twin).

It was meant as an in joke among bikers, but I was on two occasions lectured at length by someone who "used to have exactly the same Triumph".

In the current retro mania, I wonder if I would put an 'ONDA logo on the Triton? It's been in a friend's ownership since 1999.

Definitely up for that cuppa. Do you ever get to Squires? It can be a bit of a loony creche, but it's easy to find and better now the Autumn is here.

I stole the Hurley-Pugh brand so I could get away with treating the Enfield in a less reverent fashion. Same with the Pooratrek site. When marketing raises brands to the level they do,  you get people who go beyond even the dreaded "Lifestyle choice" guff and come to associate so much with a badge they take it personally. I once referred to a certain Germanic  brand as Bu*****d with a MangelWorzel and got a lovely ranting history complete with a photo of his blue and white tattoo  :-\ Accidental keyboard warrior stuff, but some people do build their personal image round such things. It's mostly harmless but some worry me.

This is of course one of the frustrations with the CB500. I've decided the styling (Optimus Primes illegitimate offspring with the Bumblebee bloke from the Simpsons) now qualifies me as a Power Ranger,  but it really doesn't have as much scope for taking the ****.

Finally built a shelter/lean too type construction to keep the weather off the bikes. Its a monster of a thing that fills my whole back yard, but needs must. Total cost, about £300. It will house four bikes comfortably, plus hopefully most of my associated sh1te  ;)

Ok Prop, you'll need to explain that one! Are you on rocket fuel only for the colder nights?

Feeble attempt at a witty joke mate 😏😁

Good morning Tim & Ian. If you guys do go to the NMM please take time out an defo check out the wooden Manx Norton a good mate of ours built. It truly is superb and extremely clever. Especially when you realise it's all been built to scale, even down to the diameter of the rear shock springs....

Yes, it's superb although I have a feeling it has moved elsewhere.

I've taken the opportunity to become a "supporter" which at less than £30 / year gives free access to the museum any time, 10% off grub in the (quite good) restaurant, a free BMS reprint every year and the chance to go for the "ride a bike" sessions and other activities. Much better value than the Stafford shows IMO.

Ahh.... moved elsewhere?, that's a shame. Sounds like a good do being a "supporter" Especially if there's tasty grub to be had 😁👍... cheers, Michael

I did go yesterday and it was a good afternoon out - especially hearing some of the bikes being run. That MV was truly awesome (and that's not a word I use lightly). An excellent 3-piece rock & roll combo (Les Paul gold-top and upright bass sounding lovely) were blasting out superb sounds although no-one was jiving.....

The wooden Manx was there (again? still? I'm sure it wasn't last time I was at the museum). There was an inexplicably long queue for Henry Cole's autograph - I declined the opportunity.

The autojumble wasn't worth much attention although H&H auctions had the barn (back of garage) find of an Enfield Constellation and Palma sidecar coming up in their next auction. Needed a little more than a rub down with an oily rag but very complete and original.
