Title: Question for Crazyfrog
Post by: Smithy on October 12, 2017, 01:21:23 PM
Or anyone else with a BMW F650.

I was doing a bit of maintenance on the F650 today when I noticed the whole gearbox mainshaft (not just the sprocket) could be moved in and out by 2 - 3mm. Pete is there any chance you could whip the sprocket cover off your F650 sometime and check if yours does the same please.

I've never noticed this on any other bike I've owned and I'm a little concerned.

Thanks for any help.

Ian

Will do Ian, though I'm going away for a long weekend tomorrow morning, so I doubt I'll have time until one night next week.

Doesn't sound quite right though does it, but if the mainshaft bearing had failed I'd expect it to take the oil seal out too and you'd have an oil leak tell tale, and some vertical movement in the shaft too....

Thanks Pete. All good points but as you say it just doesn't seem right. Anyway enjoy your weekend.

I think I can set your mind at rest Ian, mine does it too. If I grasp the sprocket nut I can move the mainshaft in and out a couple of mm, enough to give an audible clunk anyway. Weird, never noticed it on any other bike I've ever had but maybe I've just not tried it before!

Thanks Pete that's a huge relief. I don't know why it is like this but if yours does it too then it must be ok. Another result for Thumper Club!
