Title: ANY KAWA Z200 FANS ON HERE?
Post by: xbally on December 22, 2016, 01:16:42 PM
I am going to look at the bare bones of a Z200 tomorrow.Apart from looking like a mini - zed i don't know much about them and they don't seem to be a bike that's coveted, which might be a good thing?Anyone know much about the practicalities of ownership?

All I can tell you is that we have a club member who regularly uses one on our runs. Nice little bike IMHO  :)

Aye xbally,

Past member Smudge, used to own one and used it for years for courier work around Edinburgh. I haven't spoken with Smudge for some time or seen him post on here but you never know your luck. Alternatively, if you type "Z200" into the 'Search' box in the top right corner of the forum window, whilst in the 'Chatter' forum, some 20 old posts will be revealed that may be of use. If you stay in the initial 'Thumper Club' part of the forum when searching, you will get 27 posts to read and keep you amused!  ;)

My regards, Bill

I had one (another I forgot from the list).  Good bike.  Bit slow.  Cable operated front disc brake a bit weak and needed careful adjustment.  Reliable old thing though.

Sorry no pics as yet...most of it is still in the car! It's not very photogenic.Going to make an assessment tomorrow but as i've lots of other things going at the moment it may have to go under the bench while i deal with them and collect (cheap) parts. Thanks for the interest anyways......

Right-been through everything-reckon i have about half - two thirds of a bike.No V5 or reg plate though so fun and games with the DVLA unless i can turn up another frame.Still got to get the engine out of the car.Have bad back so i'm waiting for my son to assist.Missing tank,exhaust,mudguards-stuff like that-looking on Ebay prices are cheap-Z200 seems to have been by passed by the Jap classic brigade thankfully!

Thanks Michael.Got my son to help me lift the engine out of the rear footwell of the car before our Christmas meal today. It looks quite clean and tidy but i've got to see whether the plot's seized tomorrow.I don't think there's any oil in the sump as it's been usd on my workbench since 12.45 and not a drop has leaked out!

I really hope this bike was either free or dirt cheap, as you need quite a few major parts and an engine strip  ;)
Seriously though, good luck, there's nothing like a total resto, preferably on the cheap :)

£75 was the price.........Aiming to complete the resto for another £75!

I went to look at an American import (k?)z200 about 12 or 13 years ago - great nick, 6k miles and only £400. I should have bought it on the spot but spent too long dithering and of course it was snapped up by someone else.

I don't know if any of you were at the 1st(?) Thumper Club Rally near Abergavenny in 2000, but a bloke turned up with his son on pillion on a Z200 and it fairly flew along - he was probably thrashing the nuts off it but it's performance belied its size ad it certainly impressed me!

Another bike i've always wanted, even if they are a bit small but that can sometimes be part of the fun!I always liked the styling of the early Kawas:the H1 and other triples up to the early fours of the 70's and the little 200 retains that.Whether or when i'll get to ride mine i don't know. Here's hoping it will be as good as my RS250?I also understand you can fit the top end off the Z250 single?

Not sure if the top end from a z250 single will fit but I think I read somewhere that the engine is a straight swop - best to confirm that and I doubt it would offer much more power.

Hello  xbally
Good to hear that there is another little thumper fan out there. I have had mine (Z200-A4) for four years now and over that time I had some problems with the engine and with the front brake calliper, but overall it has been reliable and trustworthy commuting to and from work. I am in the process of restoring / refurbishing the little thumper now, had some trouble finding some parts, at the right price. The front brake and throttle cables are rare, other than that most parts are available. All being well my litter thumper will be finish at the end of March. Good luck with your project.    What model have you got?

I see Wemoto don't list either the front brake or throttle cable, but if you have the cable outer, their universal cable kit at £5.60, should do the job  :)

Not too sure which model i've got as i don't have a V5 nor the reg number...I do have the engine and frame numbers but i haven't yet done any research.I think it's an earlier points model. The plan is to try and be patient to collect missing parts at the right price. If a frame was to turn up with a V5 at the right price that could save me hassle with the DVLA.See other posts on here about my run in with the DVLA on my VT500.The Z2's seem to be extremely rare beasts now.A cafe racer project has just gone on Ebay for under £200 but it was in Cornwall and i'm too lazy to go that far to get another project bike!

Hello xbally
Read your other posts regarding the run in with the DVLA, what a palaver. Hope you resolve the issues.
Concerning the model identification of your z200, the A1, A1A, A2 and A3 are all points models.  Here are the frame identification numbers beginning. KZ200A-000001. to 026500. is A1, 1977-1978.     KZ200A-026501. to 036500 is A2, 1979.     KZ200A-036501. to 042000 is A3. 1980.     Hope this helps.

Had a look at the cable kit from Womoto, good idea, but cannot work out how you would connect the nipples to the cable and then on to the levers?
