I am guessing no one remembers that ad for GTX motor oil. I am also guessing that perhaps no one here remembers me - but like Arny I am back. Back with a question...about a twin.
My only bike (motor) is a Moto Guzzi T4 and I have been using Fuch's racing Titan 10W50 Synth - expensive and very high tech for a 1980s guzzi but the only alternative I can find is 20w50 mineral.
So will it make that much difference 10-20 synth to mineral?

Where are you that you can't find alternatives? There are lots of semi synth multigrades that I'm sure would do the job.

Of course, being a Guzzi, I don't see why you have to use a motorcycle specific oil (dry clutches are wonderful things) so this is an alternative:

I well remember that you do like good quality oils, preferably synthetic or semi synthetic - but does that really suit a, dare I say it, old fashioned and fairly agricultural engine like the Guzzi ? The old Beemer really doesn't like Synthetic oils for example. The Guzzi Club will doubtless have strong opinions on the matter.
Sadly I would probably be using tractor oil - and I'm not insulting the Guzzi in the slightest - I'm just a cheapskate.

yes, I remember GTX, used it in my highly modified 1390cc Cooper S mini.....
do you remember duckhams? ... 20/50, good stuff too, also... duckhams 'linklife' sold in a largish round tin, which you heated up and then put your coiled up chain in for a good old soak.

oops, just checked in the garage, under aeons of accumulated junk (not to be disposed of... never know when it might be needed), I found an empty tin of .... LINKLYFE ...

Hello Steffan, good to hear you're still sunny-side up. Have had a couple or three airhead Beemers and Guzzis. Always used Castrol Classic XL 20W-50 with no problems. I think any of the present good quality multi grade mineral oils would do the job.

My Guzzi mates run on basic car 20/50. I thought that was one of the main advantages of running a MG :)

fully synthetic in a guzzi is a bit of an overkill. synthetics are great for modern engines with super tight tolerances, but old aircooled bruisers like the guzzi, or beemer boxer arent really designed for such super thin lubrication. i always ran my beemer on mineral oil, after all, it was all there was when it was designed and sold, and pc plod ran legions of aircooled twins on mineral oil for a cumulative total that must be in the tens of millions of miles. synthetic oils in older engines tended to leak out more, (when i tried running the bmw on some fully synthetic oil i was gifted, it leaked and smoked like a good un, although it did smell nice, same issue with the katana i was at that time running, changed the nature of the bike totally when i ran it on gtx again)
the reality is that synthetics are capable of being left in an engine for an extended length of time, after all, if you only need to adjust your valve shims every 20k miles, its a bit of a pain to need to drop the oil every 5k. sythetics were designed for high revs and high pressure lean running high temp engine environments. i dont think the guzzi will be harmed one bit by running on gtx or similar, in fact i use supermarket own brand oil in my aircooled engines to this day. except for the bsa, that gets the old mineral oil i drain from the beemer....

Don't put fully synthetic oil in an engine with a wet clutch. It will want to slip all the time.

Fortunately Guzzis weren't designed with a wet clutch, at least not unless the crankshaft oil seal is leaking ;-)
And the motorcycle specific synthetics work around that problem with a different spec.
On a more serious note I have always found that older engines are far more prone to finding leaks if Synthetic is used.

I have been running Fuchs Titan racing fully synth....without a problem but am going over to Elf synth based on a cost basis 12L for a tenner more than five and Elf is available in French supermarkets.

Hey Steffan, I too think that's a VERY fancy oil for that bike, save your money.
Not only do I remember the GTX advert, I was totally taken in when I first heard the music again, currently being used for a German Caffeine Shampoo ad! (Don't put that in the T4, tho it might make it shiny and manageable).
