Title: Not a thumper but.....
Post by: iansoady on August 14, 2016, 11:19:07 AM
I've always fancied one of the 70s Honda 400/4s, especially I think because of the lovely elegant exhausts. But I feel a 40-year old machine may not be the best choice for a "modern" bike.

Anyone here have any experience of the later 1992-on 400/4 grey imports?

I had a CB1, naked Honda grey import 400/4. Nice little bike, and looked rather nice. My mate has just bought  a Yamaha XJR 400/4, which is just a grey import mini version of its big brothers.

my mates mrs had one. it was pretty enough, styled like the  original 400/4 (iirc its called a 400 super 4) it was a fab little thing, revvy and flickable like the original, only moreso, and with typicly honda build quality. she really rated it and they only sold it after the kids came along and she never rode it. as you say, the original ones are nice classics but time has moved on and they arent practical for everyday use in modern traffic, particularly the terrible front brake! but the more recent ones that came in as greys in the 1990s are grand wee things, and easily capable of holding their own against modern traffic.

If you want to look at pics of Japanese market machines, go to goobikes. Unbelievable selection of home market 250s and 400s  :)

Many thanks all. I wonder whether a set of pipes from the early model could be made to fit.......

If I do decide to make the change is anyone here interested in my SLR650? I will of course still have the 'Beam.
