Aye Steve,

Good to read you are still looning!  ;)

Used to be the antidote to Cymag, which we used when eradicating bunnies in new woodland plantings. Doesn't work with Phostoxin, as that is a different chemical.

Also used if you get angina, to relax the muscles around the blood vessels and ease the 'tightness'!  :)

I make no comment about its recreational uses, unless you are contemplating "popping your clogs!"  :(

Hammerite thinners used to be just the ticket for carbs and a thick heed!  ::)

Good health, Bill

hey Bill, yes I use hammerite thinners, but have you noticed that since being taken over by ICI, it's just not the same?.... when it was finnigans it had such a recognisable aroma... and the paint finish had that silky 'non-stick' feeling....
probably didn't conform to the eurocrats idea of a 'safe' paint.... same as the c r a p we get to spray our bikes and cars...

Aye Steve,

Sprayed a Beetle with the stuff in the early 80's, garage doors shut to keep the midges out; not a good idea!  ::)  My heed was like a large wardrobe for half the day and I had to lie down for a wee sleep. Went back and completed the job, with the doors wide open, drinking milk and it wasn't so bad, but still a bit of a thick heed.

As for the finish, the water beaded off for the first 18 months and then gradually became patchier as the years went by. Evetually, the Beetle was written off by an inconsiderate day tripper from Dundee, long story. I was fined and given penalty points, due to Scot's Law precedent from 1948! :(  I parted with the car to a local garage for 'restoration' and it has sat beside a house in the town till now, with not much 'restoration', but the Hammerite still doesn't look bad from the road.  :D

It appears, the manufacturer (ICI), legally must now use a different formulation!  >:(

Model Engineer Forum: Model_Engineer_Forum (http://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=97920) for some craic.

Old MSDS database for the "Real McCoy" formulation: MSDS_Hammerite_pre 2007_formulation (http://hazard.com/msds/gn.cgi?query=Hammerite&whole=partial&start=0)

New SDS supplied by Dulux, data supplied by ICI Paints Akzo Nobel, the makers of Hammerite now: ICI_Paints_Akzo_Nobel_Hammerite_Post 2007 (http://www.duluxtradepaintexpert.co.uk/web/pdf/safetysheets/SDSHM102.pdf)

Now that should keep the old heed well spaced for a few minutes while you digest the formulations!!  ;D

My brain, Bill

The thinners that was used in the original Hammerite was dry cleaning fluid/Trichloroethane or Trike for short.
