Just a couple o' piccies of what a thumper is all about, going for a canter either on your tod or with others. ;D MoT today for Sally so the queezy feeling rises in the pit of the gut. :(
- Sally beside the Boy Bros in Arrochar on a sunny but cool afternoon after an ice cream at Helensburgh and a 'fly by' of the nuclear subs and fuel depots at the bottom of Loch Long
- Turn a 180 degrees for the view from Arrochar of the Arrochar Alps, Cobbler is on the left at the back!
Get out this weekend you know it'll do you good.
My regards, Bill

Heading up north of the border next Wednesday with big bro and a mate for four days, staying in a hotel in Moffat and shooting off on a different ride each day. Hopefully get some of that sunshine you had that day bill. Certainly looks like a grand ol spot. Regards Michael
-
Aye Michael,
May I ask the name of the hotel, please? Often stay in Moffat whilst giving training courses and have stayed in a few.
The Indian restaurant, whilst not cheap, produces some very good 'home made' dishes and I would thoroughly recommend it. Its in the basement, next to The Star Hotel in the Square.
The forecast for Wednesday on, next week looks a bit wet and cool Moffat weather (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast/gcvdc9ryg), but the runs that you can get are really good.

Morning Bill, we are staying at the buccleuch arms hotel, real biker friendly place even has a dozen bike sheds round the back. We stayed there a couple of years ago and whilst not the most upto date place it was clean and tidy and served a most excellent breakfast, which set you up for a full days riding. Let's just hope that some warm front blows in from somewhere and the sun shines on us. I,ll let you know how we get on upon our return, hopefully all the bikes will run ok, going up on two Kwak 500twins and I,m going up on my XBR cafe racer. Regards Michael

Enjoy Moffat. I once bought a 19th century Oriental cabinet from an antiques dealer in Moffat. I was on my way up to the Highlands on my ER5 Kawasaki with a friend on a Honda CBF600. As we clearly couldn't carry it I had to go back a couple of weeks later in my wife's truck to fetch it, good times.
I have been exploring the lanes of the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border today on my SR400 and it was glorious. Next time I go I will take my camera.

Aye Michael,
Aye, nae a bad place at all and a good selection of malts if required! I am not sure if the £80 a nip still sits behind the bar, but it had been opened! :o Last time I was in was for a retirement 'do' for a local colleague of 25 years and the evening meal was good for that.
Bikes sound of a 'good sort' for the Border roads, light and handy. Have a safe time.
My regards, Bill

Sally passed her MoT! ;D
Congrats.
Bike playing up. Overheating. Whipped the thermostat out. Hope that was cause. Forecast for Moffat cool anyway, so that might help! ;D

Just got back from four days up around the glen eagles resort in Perthshire with the wife and kids. Stunning scenery and fantastic weather to boot, I,m lucky enough to be heading back up north again tomorrow morning to Moffat (and beyond) this time on the bike, fingers crossed the weather will continue and yes bill we,ll certainly be sampling some of the fantastic single malts. Not sure about the £80 a tot Cheers Michael

Hi Smithy, couple of years ago I spent a fantastic day on the Enfield in the Derbyshire/Staffs border area. Being from over here, across the water, I never released that part of Staffs was in the Peak District. Fantastic roads round the Manifold Valley area, and camped next to the Royal Oak in Whetton. Happy days :)
-
Hi Timbo
I know the pub you mean in Wetton. I turn there to go to Wetton Mill where there is a lovely tearoom doing cake and mugs of tea.
I truly believe that roads like these are perfect for thumpers and lift my heart when I ride them.
Mind you you have more than your fair share of brilliant lanes in your part of the world.
-
What I found strange is that I'd never heard of the Manifold Valley, yet just round the corner, you're in the tourist honeypot of Dovedale . :-\
-
I have a friend who works as a conservationist and project officer for Derbyshire Dales District Council and she is in favour of the creation of honeypots that draw the tourist whilst leaving other areas as more obscure and therefore less damaged habitats. I believe this is common practice in the conservation world and to some degree makes sense.
Keep the polished Goldie for those who can appreciate it wisely and let the hooligan thrash around on the SR400. Oh if only I did have a polished Goldie, problem is I'd want to thrash both!

Moffat trip was wet n windy, but it didn't stop the fun. Great riding on 500's.
1000 miles round trip, B roads (or less).
I can recommend the buccleuch arms hotel. Biker orientated and they go out of their way to accommodate you. Epic steaks and burgers!
-
Oh yes the rain, it certainly came. By the absolute bucket load but still had a great time and some good laughs and yes the hotel staff were brilliant even to the point of drying some wet clothes in their dryer. The roads and passes we took in we're fantastic even if a little damp (read drenched) at times. The 1000 miles went by far to quickly and all three of the bikes performed brilliantly and were made for the roads up there. Same time, same place next year?? Yes please

Aye Michael,
Breakfast on Thursday morning you were off rapid and I had to get to my work to sort out the course for the next 2 days. Thursday night I ate at the Indian and no sign of you and the same on Friday morning at breakfast. :( However, the black Corsa heading up the Devil's Beef tub on Friday night (as I headed home after a fish supper and apple pie and icecream in the Richmond Hotel), with the thumbs up as the XBR with the cream or white tank lead the charge down the hill to Moffat, with one ER5 in close company and another a wee way behind, was me on my way home. Sounded sweet as well. ;)
Pleased to read that all went well and you returned home safe. I am lucky to be able to ride as and when on these roads.
My regards, Bill

Morning Bill, shame our paths did,nt cross, would have been nice to put a face to the name so to speak. We almost ate at the curry house on the Thursday eve as we,d missed the cut off point at the Annandale arms. (By one minute) we ended up having a fantastic steak at the buccleuch arms where we were staying instead. Your a lucky man with them there roads on your doorstep, still I can,t complain as I have the Yorkshire dales pretty much on mine. Like I said we will most certainly be back up at some point so maybe we could meet up and av a little tipple of on of Scotland's finest single malts. Best regards Michael
Ps glad you liked the sound of the XBR with the white tank ;) ;) ;)

......Ps glad you liked the sound of the XBR with the white tank ;) ;) ;)
Yes, the xbr does sound rather good. BUT.... The black "er5", being a twin, sounds twice as good.
Just checked that on me slide rule and, yeah, that checks out right. ;D ;D 8)
Hee hee. Light the blue touch paper.....
-
Yes I must admit that for an ER5 it does sound very good, however it is a TWIN. The devils work I tell ya >:( >:( 8)

Hi bill.
Were you anything to do with the cycling event?
Cheers andrew
-
Aye Michael and Andrew,
Nothing to do with the cycling event. I was running a training course on climate, soil and trees. :-X It's the day job. ;)
Aye, the alfresco mix and match menu at the Buckcluck is good and the meat is local and properly hung. "The Duke" steak and ale pie or the myriad of burgers are.......inflationary and I'm not sure why you are worried about a wee pot noodle having stayed at the Buckcluck? ;D
Haddock and egg for breakfast always a good choice as it doesn't sit in the gut like a lead weight whilst digging holes. Speaking from experience.
Go canny, Bill

Sounds like an interesting job you have. Different.
It's precisely because I've had a spell at the buckloo that I'm looking at my calories. As someone on the pot noodle thread said, you want to cut your calories, then eat less. Happens to be my philosophy too. But the fact that certain labelling does nothing to help "management" was my point. And a bit of fun along the way.
My er5 is actually a gpz500, although one wouldn't know that from a cursory look.
-
Sorry Andrew, but with a closing speed of a 'ton' and your front wheel up the chuff of the XBR, I didn't stand much of a chance with the ID! ;)
The heated windscreen elements in the Corsa windscreen also don't help much if the light catches them. Corsa on hire, I wouldn't buy one.
All the best with the dark rye Ryvita! Tinned fish and coarse oatcakes, without palm oil, keep me fuelled all day on the hill.
My regards, Bill

A ton? You must have caught us on one of the hairpins. ;D
Don't worry, your mince pies aren't letting you down. It looks nothing like a gpz anyway. Hope you had the window down and your right lug taking in the cacophony.
A single and a 180 twin. Lay that funky rhythm on me.
-
A TON!!! Must av been raining, or the end of a long days ride ;) ;) ;)
-
Aye, you'd no have been doing a 'Ton' twixt Megget and Talla! ;)
Also, just be aware the Police use those roads for 'fast' driving 1:1 tuition on occasion! A plain charcol grey Bora last time I spoke! ;) And the 'Beeftub' run is a favourite haunt for the hairdryer 'blow job'.
Go canny, Bill
-
Ton twixt megget and tella ?????? Hair dryer blow job????? Can you please explain what these sayings mean bill. Yorkshire twang can be hard enough to understand at times but get me north of the border and I,m totally lost. Ps thanks for the advice about the local fuzz. (Do the kids still use that phrase I wonder?). Regards Michael

I took it to mean breathalyser. If you pass you get a blow job from the blonde poh Leece woman wearing suspenders sat in the passenger seat. If you fail you get a blow job from the hairy poh Leece gentleman type occifer that pulled you over. Simples :o
We don't drink and ride so that aspect isn't a problem.
Re the bikes, Bill didn't see the steam comin orf me BT45's when we pulled in. There I am, blowin me own trumpet now! ;D ;D
