Depending on how a potential ebay purchase pans out I may own a CB250/500R soon. It has an FT motor installed, most of the e-start junk has been removed but it still has the original L/H engine side cover in place. I'd like to remove it and replace it with non e-start one.
Can anyone tell me what this would involve...is it even possible?

i have an RS/XL/FT mogrel which iam currently building i brought it with the motor fitted into the frame and has had the E start stuff removed and a XL cover put in place. at the same time the balancer was also removed.
if its had all the e start removed then you "should" be able to swap the covers.
out of interest the is the RS you have been looking blue? with a down turned pod filter?

Has the crank been balanced? removing the stock balancers can lead to a cracked frame.

Why would you remove the balancers? On my CB500RS I once got the balance timing wrong and it would vibrate across the driveway when you revved it while on the sidestand.

The RS I acquired is the one with the downturned pod filter.
I know that an XL/RS cover should fit, but I'm not sure if it will have enough clearance to accomodate the starter ring gear on the FT flywheel? If not I would also need to replace that item too. Can anyone advise if changing a flywheel can create issues with the rest of the electrics? Or are they interchangeable?
The bike was already registered as a 500, even so, I had a bit of trouble getting insurance. Would have been much easier had the engine change not been notified!

i didnt remove the balancer it was brought as an unknown, have had it running and it doesnt vibrate overly or any more than some old thumpers ive come across

You will need to change the flywheel (rotor) and the windings if you want to convert it to kickstart plus the cover of course, then you will need the kickstart side case and the automatic decompression lever and cable, basically an RS 250 bottom end

Carole Nash insured mine without any problems, they called it a modified classic.
