Title: Expensive Suspension
Post by: Richard on April 14, 2014, 01:14:58 PM
I can buy dampers for my Landrover from as cheaply as £20 each (Armstrong).  Seperate springs are cheap.  Stop sniggering Jethro.

Yet dampers/springs for my twin shock BMW are about £70 each.

Why ?

Bike kit is always more expensive due to lower production volumes, but have you compared the Landrover costs to say, a BMW X5?

No one ever said they wouldn't buy a bike because the parts were expensive. It's the same sale as Russian fish eggs, Italian Sunglasses and walls grafitied on in a certain style; fashion.

Landrovers used to be bought as working vehicles by people who might work out the whole vehicle cost of that and the competitor.

There is also the aftermarket pricing factor: you won't scrap the bike over seventy quid. I can point you in the direction of a certain Landrover part that they bought for a tenner, sold themselves for three hundred and Halfords sold for seven hundred. When your Discovery failed the MOT for bad brakes you'd buy one and because it was a safety item few people would buy the Turkish copy for a hundred.

Car volumes reduce costs but prices cease to be related once there is a margin. In thirteen years in the industry I never took much notice of costs. On the OE side you get the sale even at a loss so that the AM side can bring in the big money.

A few years ago I was considering buying a Jaguar XKR as they can be picked up relatively cheaply these days. I changed my mind when I found out the dampers were £800 each  :o

Do your research with this sort of stuff. The likes of brake pads and dampers don't have that many variations, so the same bit in a Ford box or Federal Mogul bag or Wun Hung Lo newspaper and tape will move the decimal point.

Andy

Its the active ride that pushes up the price.
