I have just read through (most of) the "Christmas" topic and I too was saddened by the outcome. I have thought for some time that this forum has become a stick to beat some of the members or their own personal views. Im saddened by the vindictive few who lash out sarcastically (and those who reply-I must admit I have been caught up in that tide) at those who actually want to talk thumpers or linked subjects. Im tired.....(I wanted to reach the big 1000)
Enough said.

+1 to that.
OK, "what oil should I put in my xbr" has a very limited lifespan. In next bike mode I'm hanging about on some Guzzi and SR sites and they are frankly boring. The Bonneville shopping, polish and mechanical terror site is worse. I do think we need to stick to basic pub rules though.

I agree and fairly simple to enforce. Does anyone have an issue with this ?

I also agree with you Ian.

This is one of the standard rules on a lot of forums and stops a lot of unpleasent arguements developing so probably a good idea - No objections from me.

I've not been frequenting this site for that long, but for what it's worth I have no problem with that suggestion.
As an observation, the thread in question would have been terminated at the opening post by those rules. I was quite looking forward to hearing some more views on the subject. I didn't see the need for it to be terminated, but I quite understand another's point of view also.
My favourite motorcycle forum is sadly no longer in use, but it was run very openly indeed. It was stimulating as there were virtually no rules, or none that I ever became aware of, except that you had to behave generally as gentlemanly as possible. I never saw a thread terminated and only once saw the arbitrator step in and ask for offensive dialogue to be calmed down, at which point it was.
Here's to some stimulating conversation and a modicum of Mickey taking along the way! (If Mickey taking is banned I best clear off now).

Agreed motorcycles and related topics only.

The sink hole that is ADV riders yo-mamma area springs to mind. For every informative or thought provoking post there are pages and pages of bullying, trolling, repetitive attempts to make a single point of view become the groups agreed position and other such bits of keyboard warriorship that would have no place in a non-electronic pub. Humour is of course often lost there as it is an American site!
I think behaving like one would in a real pub does not exclude non-bike related topics, only those likely to get out of hand? In a real pub of course you can sit in a quiet corner and talk about anything you like, here there is only full volume in the main bar without even a wink to tell you some outrageous point of view is meant to be taken in jest.

Steve, simply enforcing that rule will mean losing a heck of a lot of good input to the Forum, what about Ethanol in fuel, Policing policies, European legislation, Jethro's and Rob's postings :D, etc. All we need is a little more moderation in what and how we say things, I am not here meaning "Moderator Control", simply not the fairly hard hitting rants we have had in the past on a personal level. Rants in the Rants section and not aimed at specific people except anti-motorcycle politicians of course.
Just my 2d's worth,
Furry

My apologies to you all if my mono-syllabic repost caused offence, I was getting 'hacked off' and rather than refer for moderation, tapped the keyboard! :-[
I agree with the proposal and will try to "walk away" from the keyboard, rather than carry on with the 'tap dance'!
May I add that the 400mg antibiotics are still going down the hatch, but the thumping of the jaw has reduced. No alcohol until Wednesday! ???
Bits have also been bolted back onto Morini the Minx and the new timing belt is the plan(!) for tomorrow. If I have time I might even add something to the 'Project' thread.
Furry's post popped in afore mine, so have just given it a read. Aye!
My regards, Bill.

OK, as most obviously religious person here by definition and vocation I think the idea of banning religion, politics and ...whatever it else it was really sucks. I think that it is helpful from time to time to have a pause and a rethink, but hey, we are all big boys and girls and so long as we can keep it civil and in good humour - our time together is enriched by not having these subject banned.
I love coming here, if I didn't would I opt for an open invite to you all for breakfast once or twice a year? No I wouldn't!
In a season of goodwill, however you want to define it, surely having had time to pause, we can carry on as before i.e: ruthlessly ripping the piss out of each other whilst smiling inanely, and taking four fifths of every serious enquiry as an opportunity for smutty double entendre. We are after all the Thumper club and that is what being here is all about; is it not?
Oh and it has something to do with one cylinder motorbikes too apparently, but not two strokes...
Happy New Year you lot!!
Rev. Steffan ;D

RIGHT. That's it. I'm off. ;D
Bunch of b****y Neanderthals emptying perfectly flammable oil out of your INTERNAL COMBUSTION engines and throwing it away.
Happy Year

Well I like Two Strokes. Now where did I put that jacket ?

I would agree that it is the diversity of people who post here that make it more interesting than many other forums. To some extent that is also part of the problem, because we have a diverse range of people inevitably at some point people will disagree on a topic, this is is not an issue and debate is healthy, when however one of the party feels aggrieved and decides to leave the forum taking their knowledge and input with them than that is a loss to all on the forum.
The admittedly rather blunt proposal is to remove topics which rightly or wrongly do tend to polarize opinion and cause issues.
I would be interested on hearing any other proposals you may have on how we can help prevent similar problems occurring in the future ?
Steve

Well what a lot of huff!
Firstly (and most importantly) hope you all had a very merry Christmas and here's to the best of New Years to you all.
On to the subject in hand...
Personally, I think banning topics, whatever their sentiment, is a recipe for disaster. Banter, discussion and argument are what make virtual pubs like this forum worth visiting. What we have here is one person got upset (unjustifiably IMHO) by an innocent enough comment. Well, people get p1ssed off by such comments all the time... Even the best of mates can fall out over nonsense.
Abuse is never acceptable, and if it occurs it should be removed from the site. But abuse could arise within any thread, whatever the subject. God (whichever version you want ;) ) knows I've faced enough over my love of gas stoves! ::)
Let's also put this in context too. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the first 'thread gone bad' we've had (?) Let's not throw our toys out the pram for a one off.
So may I propose the following; No ban on subjects - it would never work as threads wander all over the place; If anyone gets upset either A) stop following that thread or B) report the thread to a moderator; And if anyone post anything abusive they get taken off forum.
Well that's my opinion, make of it what you will.
(Oh and for the record, I am a religious atheist ??? )
-
Thank you Pat.
I am fairly confident that we will continue to fall out on occasion but to remove the ability to banter would hugely reduce my reasons for being here amongst a bunch of mates.
Let us put it behind us and crack on.
Richard

Well... firstly... as others have said.... hope you all had a great Christmas break... and the new year brings with it health & happiness for all at TC.
Now... I havn't a clue what brought this thread into being... shant let that stop me having an opinion thought ;)
I did take the time to read it all though... and so's not to bore the pants off everyone, i'll just say that I'm 100% with Steffan on this
and agree with squrrelcv...
personally... I go with Self moderation... and if you can't quite manage that... then take your debate off site... and be rude to each other in private....
pip pip you lot

Thank God that's all sorted out! ;D
Ron.

I think the problem is whoever it was has left the forum so isn't here to tell you they've gone. If they could respond to say "It was me, I left the forum." they would obviously be lying as they were here to see your post and respond. ??? :o ::) :-[ ;D
-
except that all those who posted in that thread have since posted in the forum. the only one who actually said they were off has posted here on this very thread, so it appears that nobody left the forum. thus we have a thread here complaining about an event that never happened?
-
of course, were i to be mischevious i could say that the worlds religions are full of unfulfilled and broken promises, but what would be the point in stating the obvious! ;) ;D :-X
-
As you asked more than once, I am back merely to say that I have left!
