Gareth bought RobG's XBR and, because he's busy for a few weeks, he asked me if I'd like to razz it around for a while.
It's been a long time since I rode my signature bike and it's fair to say that I was very very excited at the prospect:

The ride home was fantastic, it was like I'd got off an XBR only the day before.
Thanks Gareth ;)

And yes, it was a first outing for the £25 race suit I picked up at last October's Stafford show:

An XBR to play with and an ER5 in the corner of the garage, two of my favourite bikes. Enjoy you lucky man!

It's clever how they've managed to incorporate the girdle into the race suit.....Playtex?.... ;D

Yawn ;)
Actually I am about 7 pound heavier than I have been lately. I'm still just under 14 stone and at six foot that's not too bad. The bugger is that it makes a big difference to my running. It's not so bad if I'm doing a slower pace on a long run, say 20 miles, but if I want to do a good time for a 5k or 10k run it does make it much harder.
I was working up to doing my first full marathon but I got a chest infection that stopped me training. The next thing I knew, three weeks had gone by and I'd de-trained to the extent that I was struggling to run further than 15 miles. I suspect that if I was ten years younger I would have shrugged the illness off. Middle age is a pain eh?
As for the bike, I got out again yesterday for a longer blast and it is just astounding how comfortable I felt on it. Everything works as it should and in no time at all I was happily tipping into bends like a loon. I've been riding a CB500, an ER5 and a Yamaha Diversion since I last had an XBR on the road and I doubt I went as fast on those as I did on the XBR yesterday.
I've got an XBR to prep in my garage at the minute, the ex-Smudge sidecar tug. The bike needs stripping to fully assess how bad the rot is (no offence Smudge, but it is a little rusty). The engine is Fubar, but that's not a problem given that I have a few under the bench. The one problem is petrol tanks, they tend to rot. If you're an XBR owner and you get offered a good tank, buy it, they are going to be in very short supply. The XBR I'm borrowing has the tank from my old bike fitted, but Gareth is having the original tank repaired so hopefully I'll get my tank back.

As for the race suit... I'd been keeping an eye out for a cheap 80s one-piece for a while, but at the Stafford show, cheap seems to mean £90+
On the sunday lunchtime I wandered over to the Dirt Bike hall to drool over Bultaco trials bikes and I browsed a jumble stall selling mostly Bultaco bits. Hanging at the back was this suit. I asked how much and he said £25. Hmmmm... would it fit? not bloody likely given how cheap it was, I'm not that lucky. He held it up for me and we agreed that it looked close and damn it, for £25 I could afford to take the chance.
I paid the money and then sloped off to the shower room to try the suit. As soon as I put it on I knew it fitted. I walked back up to the clubstand and Gareth agreed that there was nothing I could do about the shape I am, but the suit fitted it pretty well indeed. Chuckling to myself I walked back to the Dirt Bike hall and bought the seller a pint. We then had a very enjoyable natter for half an hour or so. One of the happiest transactions I've ever made at Stafford :)

I've just been out for another good long ride on the bike and it's like falling in love again ;D
Or perhaps it's like one of those Friends Reunited meetings where you find yourself back in a hotel room doing what you and your old girlfriend used to do a lot of back in the 80s ;)
