Title: Velorex
Post by: Richard on September 03, 2012, 06:30:19 PM
Are Velorex fittings still available ?

Anybody put one on an MZ 250 ?

Remarkably, as I live in West Wales, I have found somebody selling one in Llanddewi Brefi only about 8 miles away.

Agree with Mark !

You may end up making some for the MZ-Velorex Interface !

I've still got the Squire MZ steerer tube sidecar mount here... you can have it if you want it. Unfortunately the rest of my sidecar fittings are with Ian Taylor at the minute as he sees what he needs to fit a chair to a Ural.

Thanks Graham, if I get it (tis on ebay) then I may call on you for inspiration !

It started life on a Jawa and was for a while hitched to a Norton 650SS, is rusty and the paint is very much in need of fixing up - but it is very, very close.

I will need to appoint a number of "sidecar consultants" obviously :-)

What you need is a consultant shrink - you know it leads to madness.

Very funny Steffan (but true).

Dave Angle of f2 tells me that Velorex never made a fitting kit for the left hand fitting of one of their chairs to an MZ but it must be doable/bodgeable given the knowledge on this forum.

See what happens I suppose.

Well I have bought it - for £74.  Collect either this evening or in the morning I suppose.

Best get the wire brushes and hammerite ready.

I have in mind an army green I have a large tin of for body, and black smooth hammerite or similar for the chassis.

Another project - just what I needed :-)

Hi Richard - so do you need this fitting?

I will do, but am otherwise engaged right now.  I will strip and clean it up first and was beginning to think about fitting it to the Beemer instead of the MZ.

Watching http://www.returnofthecaferacers.com/2012/09/motorcycle-road-trip-long-live-kings.html#more is slowly convinving me to move away from the rearsets and Jota bars.  That and age.

How do you think it would go on a Beemer /7 then ?

Your timing is spot on......

Most garden centres have an offer on for spring bulbs at this time of year. A couple of bags of compost and a few bags of Daffs and you will have a fine garden feature in March.

A bit like this.

Done that search already - there are better examples on youtube of all things but most are right hand fitting.  It seems to involve the making of a complex looking bracket that runs much the whole length of the bike too.  Beemer frames are a bit weak for sidecars, as are the forks and - on mine - the brakes (as Graham will testify I am sure).  At least it still has Timken bearings where it matters.

Better choice than sticking it onto an MZ....easier for a start  ;)
Proper sidecar tyres available too, 19" and 18".

It just so happens I have some fittings for BMW....might fit yours.

Excitement here in Lampeter - thinking R80 bevel boxes and stuff.

Take the bike back to R100/7 standard with wider/higher bars and all, 'normal' footrests, lose the fairing etc etc.

I would try it with the standard bevel box first.
Velorex very light.
I did lower the gearing on my Bonnie for The Dragon.......there was no need !
Went around Ireland 2 up towing a trailer and all the gear. No problem !
Popping along at 60-70mph easily.

My thinking is that the R100S was the highest geared of all /7s - they actually reduced the gearing on the RS but made a few internal changes to make use of the higher revs.  It can be fairly high stepping as it is.  What it will need is a new clutch and the rear crankshaft oil seal replacing first however.

I don't know how the standard forks will cope but given the cost of fancy leading links etc, will have no choice but to try.

Several choices to beef up the forks.

Stronger springs
Spacers
Old Valve springs on top of original springs.
Or a combination of the above....within reason.

I have done all three at one point or another and found it can work quite well.

And heavier oil.

I was thinking more about the side to side pressure on what are only 35mm forks rather than the uppy downy thing  :)

It  has a fork brace on mind, they were terrible with only the pressed steel thingy on.

Yep, bought it but could never be bothered fitting it. I forget which way i wanted to change the gearing. All I know is that I wasn't too happy with the ratios provided by the R65 bevel box mated up to the R80 gearbox.

Just found the Beefed up Velorex Swing arm I had made !

Need to find a 20mm spindle.

Some different bearings for the wheel and some spacers made.
When you all sorted I can do that for you.

I will be in the fair city in the not too distant future. I could persuade that charming young lass I live with to call by and pick up some bits if that would help...

What do you mean GC not going to the Dragon - I mean that would be the end of the end of civilization...

nearly.

My wife and sister in law booked a hotel stay for us all in Majorca for the February half term. Guess which weekend it covers...  :(

I'm not really keen to have any sort of conversation about it. You can all imagine how I feel. And yes of course spending time with my kids is more important, but a little prior consultation would have been desirable.
