Title: Different wheels
Post by: Steve H on April 12, 2012, 07:35:17 AM
I am planning on putting SZR wheels on an SRX, the first hurdle is the wheel spindle size. The SRX spindle is 15mm in diameter and the SZR wheel bearing has an outside diameter of 40mm. I was hoping to find a bearing which would match this but have drawn a blank. I have a number of options

Has anyone tried option 2 or a had a wheel machined as described in 3 ?.

Hi Steve,
If you look at the Sprocket carrier on the SRX it effectively uses the option 2 that you wrote about so I dont think there should be a problem using a sleeve of 15/17 dimensions either on each bearing or a "through" sleeve. It will obviously only have wall thickness of 1m/m, so may be awkward to manufacture.
Are you after a great weight reduction, or will the SRX/Diversion wheels "do the job"?

Hi Steve,
              Further thoughts.......

Is it possible to drill/bore out the hardware to allow a Ø17 spindle to be used (I have just done a silmilar thing for a friend who wanted to change the wheels on his XT660).That way you can use the standard bearing setup....just a thought

Ian :)

Hi Steve
Being the diligent chap we know-and-love I'm almost certain you've contacted any number of bearing suppliers, but could I recommend the following:

http://www.derbybearings.co.uk/ (http://www.derbybearings.co.uk/)

http://www.btpltd.co.uk/ (http://www.btpltd.co.uk/)

Both were have been very helpful sourcing bearings for various re-builds.

Cheers

Having done something similar in the past.

I changed the bearings, keeping the same width and external diameter but with larger internal diameter.
But lucky enough to have access to a lathe I made a spacer to fit between them.
Of coures they were held in with Blu-Tack
