Title: XBR Carb rubbers
Post by: oldbanger on October 10, 2011, 09:56:19 AM
Does anyone out there know a source for XBR carb rubbers? I want to take my carb off to clean and also clean out the jets which i suspect may be a reason the bike cuts out as I coast up to the traffic lights at low revs when hot (any ideas on that??). I have heard the rubbers get so hard that it is impossible to put the carb back on .

If it's cutting out at or close to tickover don't strip your Carb! They all do that! It's an XBR thing. There were some modified valve clearences that were supposed to help. Upping the tickover a little also helps.

PS - if you've left it standing for a few weeks and you find there is no compression, don't panic and pull the head off ( many have!), cos thats an XBR thing too. I don't know why they do it, but if you keep kicking it over compression will eventually return and it'll run right as rain.

PPS - If you ever have to take the head off and find a hairline crack between the plug hole and a valve seat also don't panic - they all do that too and it doesn't seem to make any difference.  ;D

My old FX400R used to do that!! If left for any length of time it used to loose compression. On the evil four it turned out to be sticking rings. A very quick small squirt of two stroke oil down the spark plug orifice used to help starting. If it's the same on the XBR it might be a worth while thing to do if she's been laid up for a while.

Under the carb is a primary mixture screw. Put a piece of rubber hose over a small flat screwdriver bit and turn it 1/4 turn in or out. Take the bike for a ride and see if the problem's gone or worse. If it's worse, turn the screw 1/2 turn in the opposite direction. Problem solved. It's worth while to occasionally drain the carb bowl with the little screw on the side below the bowl. Water gets in there.
