Title: Film
Post by: guest146 on July 19, 2011, 04:49:05 PM
Just like to recomend the new 3D IOM film revolving mainly around Guy Martin  The effect is very good and makes racing look its real speed, its also quiet funny at times and also sad.

Regards Ken

Good film and worth watching, they do rather over glorify the gory stuff but Guy Martin is a very witty chap.

And how many good films are there about bikes and racing ?

On any Sunday is about it.  Anybody who thinks Silver Dream Machine was good should have their sense of taste rebooted as its not working.

And re the gory stuff Mark I still feel a bit unwell when I recall you telling me about what happened to your face   :o , quite apart from having seen far too many gory scenes at work.

43!!!

i first saw on any sunday about 3 years ago, and its timeless, ok the technology is old and the riding gear dated, but i doubt messrs rossi, lorenzo, stoner et al, and indeed martin and mcguinness have any more passion and enthusiasm for their sport than any of the guys in this film. its about the passion.

i also got an asian import of the dvd of worlds fastest indian, for the sole reason that it contains the documentry 'offerings to the gods of speed' that is the original burt munroe story, it was shown on tv in nz in the 1980's and the films producer saw it when he was a teenager and thought that if he had the chance he might like to make the film of munroes life story one day. the doc isnt on most of the uk dvds but i knew it was on the southern hemisphere versions of the film. and tbh, its more entertaining than the film itself!

'Girl on a motorcycle' Marianne Faithfull.

Get you chocolates ready for this one. ;)

But neither 'Girl on a Motorcycle' or 'I bought a Vampire Motorcycle' are about the sporting side.  The former is pretty rubbish really, the latter a cult movie that I got free tickets to the premier of, so popular was it.  I enjoyed it hugely.

What about films of the cafe racer era then ?  Couple of good ones there.

"Continental Circus" from Jérôme Laperrousaz.
The 1969 season of GP with Jack Findlay, Ago, and the others.
It follows the season of Findlay (the eternal private pilote) and his girlfriend, Nanou and his Matchless G50. The music is from Gong.

"Burt Monroe" : some kind of competition. Very good dialogs : "hey burt, what happened if you open your mouth a such a speed ?" "A big hole in your trousers"  ;D ;D

"Le Cheval de Fer" from Pierre-William Glenn (who is french ...) the 1974 season of GP : with Patrick PONS, Michel ROUGERIE, Rene GUILI, Bernard FAU, Phil READ, Giacomo AGOSTINI and the others...

"Quadrophenia", music from The Who, with Sting.

In "The knack ... and how to get it" I think there are Cafe Racers but I am not sure.

Here's a list of film where Motorbike took place (with a help from Moto Revue Classic, a french vintage bike magazine :

Motor Psycho, a Russ Meyer film
Sisters in leather
Short cuts
Naked under leather
The great escape
Officer and gentleman
Rusty james
Arizona junior
Indiana Jones (the one with Sir Sean Connery)
Un american a Roma
Beach party (first apparition of japanese bikes ?)
Sun and sex
Erotissimo
Le Gitan
New generation
Scratch
Big Jake
Magnum force
Sfera della moorte
Irene
Harley Davidson and the Marlboro man
How to stuff a wild bikini (!)
Dixie dynamite
Fast Charlie
Hanover street
If
R.P.M
Zeppelin
Who dares wins
Purple rain

And many others. Most of them are what we call in France "des Nanards", so bad that its a shame to pronounce their titles  :o

Lawrence of Arabia

Ah, Lawrence of Arabia and his Brough Superior.

You know that we, the french, are not very found of foreign languages. And all foreign movies are dubbed (is it correct for dubbing ?).

I don't know if it cames from dubbing but the sound of motorcycles in movies are totally insane : a four trocke sportbike have the sound of a motocross 2 strocke 250 cc, sometimes one bike sounds like a 2 stroke and 2 mn after it sounds like a 4 stroke.

I hate this. Can you imagine a Harley Davidson sounds like an Elsinore ?

Leather Boys is a great movie, got a copy on DVD here. Shot partly on location at the Ace.

Also another daft Brit 60s teen movie 'Some People' has a pretty unconvincing bike gang but some evocative shots of bikes whizzing around Bristol.
Here's a song from the film:

I want to get a copy of Continental Circus, it looks great. The crash section is a bit sobering though:

Here's one i bought recently, 'Once a Jolly Swaggman'. A 1948 speedway film, all filmed at New Cross stadium. You should see the size of the crowds! Why isn't speedway so popular anymore, i f'n love it!
Main character played by Dirk Bogarde. Also features 'Compo', ie Bill Owen, Thora Hird and Sid James. Bit corny, very predictable, but of its time, nominated for a BAFTA. :o
