Title: May Classic motorcycle mechanics
Post by: squirrelciv on April 16, 2011, 11:01:08 AM
Next months CMM has a 5 page MIRAS write up on the XBR and the Harris special version. Also a 5 page article on the Sanglas singles.

Thought some here might like to know.

Sanglas, I had a photograph of the 500 single in the late 70s and always thought they looked really good.

Anybody here ridden one ?

Aye John,

Sanglas engine was a Sanglas engine, so far as I am aware. Will have a dig for info and post accordingly.

Regards, Bill.

I don't think so. I saw quite a few at the Colombres Rally last year in Spain and they don't look like a Rotax......I think it's their own engine and the ones with electric start are obvious, with a huge starter motor sticking out of the crankcase.

Their own engines included an impressive looking 500 single until taken over by some Japanese company - Yamaha I think, after which there were apparently some 400 twins (XS) about.

Do you own one of these (Sanglas)?

Used their own 500 single...also had a twin front disc setup...covered !
Not sure if it was along the lines of Honda Inboard Disc load of nonsense

And then used Yam XS400 power plant.

I believe it was an inboard system which Honda apparently pinched off Sanglas!! (not the first time they were known to pinch an idea!!)

They used the XS motor because Spain had banned the import of complete Japanese bikes at the time so Sanglas bought 4000 XS engine units instead.....I bet Yamaha couldn't believe their luck in shifting them!!

Wouldnt be suprised at all !

Disc brakes....RFVC....oval pistons.....plus countless others...all done before but "H" say they were the First.

OK....they often.....not always....make a better go of it.
Usually because of better materials etc....!

Only just noticed but the club gets a web page notice at the end of the XBR article.

Hi I saw the article this week, it was good but then I have always had a soft spot for the XBR, sorry I let mine go now. I have an NX 650 but it's not the same. One day I will get the money together to get another one.

It was a great article (apart from the bit where they said the handling wasn't too good in some respects - pah!). The one direct result of reading it is that my Ikuzawa (Harris/XBR) has been moved up the rebuild schedule and will be the only bike on the bench for the near future. As it was the sidecar rebuild had hit a snag when I spent two hours degreasing the stripped bike frame only to discover yet another crack in it (its third).

I'm off to the bike garage now to move all the other XBR stuff to one end out of the way to make room for the Ikuzawa rebuild.

Between work and family duties I'm currently managing about half an hour a week in the garage so don't hold your breath  ;)

Your doing better than me GC  :'( Came back from the Cardiff VJMC show full of hope and inspiration, ripped off the dust sheets from Abigail and took a serious look at the rear calliper hanger problem... realised the disc I've got is too small a radius... Remembered I've no spare cash till at least June... Threw the dust sheets back over the bike and bu99ered off indoors for a sulk and a cuppa. >:(

I'm no further on. I had a mooch in the garage and realised that I have to build some shelving to house my stock of XBR parts. I also need a load of plastic storage boxes. I will pick some up tomorrow and make a start sorting the bits into related piles.

Storing footrest hangers and switchgear is easy, but my many wheels are much harder to store. Any thoughts?

Sanglas did indeed use their own engines. It's a short stroke (90x79) pushrod unit, with a duplex chain drive to the gearbox, which comes in 4 or 5 speed varieties. I know this, as i have one and they're good fun to ride - not quick, but the handling's OK. parts are get-able in the UK, as long as you use the net and work in spanish.... pix to follow!
