Title: BEER!
Post by: Dogbad on March 24, 2011, 02:37:45 AM
I haven't partakenificationised in alcoholic beverages more than 2 or 3 times in the past 15 years due to the effect it has on the huge stash of medications I am on for the rest of. 15th April will be my 15th |Birthday, new life started when I went into the coma, and I would like to celebrate with something special. Back in the day I used to like good dark beers, witbread dark mild was one of my favourites.  had a pint of Brains Beer last birthday, aptly named et, but it was in lousy surroundings and I didn't really enjoy it. There are a few obvious choices such as Old Peculier but I'd happily take recommendations on what to try and find that is a good one.
Not a Bitter fan in general more Ales and odd ones. I used to love bottled double diamond but I don't know if that is still available.
Recommendations would be appreciated. 15 Anniversary of confounding the medical people in general and the brain surgeon in Particular by living!

blandford fly, an ale that is brewed with ginger and actually tastes like a strong alcoholic ginger beer, ditto banana bread beer, tastted like it sounds! though if its been a while, you might want to try some of the smoothflow type canned bitters as they taste a shedload better than the older canned beers did.

If you fancy something a bit darker I recommend Neath Black, a very nice stout.
Failing that try and search out a good porter. Tesco's have an own brand one that's made for them by Adnams I think.
Of course after all that you could just have a bottle of Dog (Newky Brown)...

You bastards.  I have decided that I am taking a day off work and going to spend all of it in the pub.

I haven't done that for a while now.

Liquid breakfast, lunch, tea and supper.

booths supermarket (for those in the south you might not find one, booths are a smaller independent supermarket predominently in the north and northwest of england) have a great selection of ales, more than any of the big boys. even the small booths near my mums stocks 30 or more bottled beers as well as the usual mainstays of canned lagers and bitters. theyre very well regarded in the retail offlicence trade cos their staff are quite well trained as to what each ale is like. the bigger booths about 6 miles from me has probably 100 different ales about 30 or so specialist lagers and probably 20 or more ciders and perrys. if you arent sure what youd like go to the booths near you and ask the staff what they reccomend.

Some good suggestions here thanks.  I might do some cycling and camping up near to Keswick for the few days around it so I can nip into the Booths there and see what is in stock.  Do like the sound of "Black Neath" so far. As for Newcastle Brown :o I was arrested, aged 13 in 1975, lying in a school field where the local residents said I hadn't moved for a good while and that was after sinking 12 bottles of the foul stuff at about 11am!  Even the thought of it makes me feel like "Blowing Chunks".

Cains
Hobgoblin
Goliath
Badger Original
Old Speckled Hen

All good stuff and available in the cheapy shops.

One-Stop do a really nice Italian lager, can't remember what it's called though  ::)

My Dad reckons Cains is similar to Double Diamond (I'm too young to remember)

I don't know if it's just me but I don't reckon Newcastle Brown tastes like it used to.

Friday night is beer night in my house!

Cheers,
Dave B

Got the same tastes as pigafetta. What a great selection there, all my usual vices. Though i went off Goliath a bit when they changed the brewery site and bottle, never tasted the same after that. :'(

:o   Cains is sounding good so far!   I have nipped to the local LIdl and they have the English ales for £14-99 deal there. I might take one of those before the local Yoof get 'em all!

Wifey's favorite tipple. Brings back floods of good memories of her time in Oz.

Batemans  xxxB and Victory.

Being a Yellow Belly I do love a pint of Batemans. Saying that I'm not fussed about the Combined Harvest, but I think the Hop Bine is a very, very good beer.

I've had a pint of Brains for the p0ast few years as it seems a good way to mark Brain Injuries ::) but I'm not really enjoying it so I thin a good Stout is the way to go this year.

My tastes are also the same as the Pigfetla, but I do like the Badger Champion.

Having spent most of my youth in Lincolnshire processing beer to its base constituents I can recommend leaving batemans XXX well alone.

Had a good stout made by titanic the other day -hints of vanilla and chocolate which doesn't actually sound as good as it tastes now I think about it ;)
