Title: Did you know
Post by: guest7 on February 04, 2011, 07:57:43 PM
A brand new ABSAF Gold Star (road) engine costs (Euro)6430 (+vat)?

Hmmm...

Mind you, that doesn't include a carb or gearbox or frame or wheels or tank or seat or controls or clocks or loom or erm... lots  ;)

Think of how many Chinese 250's or even XBR engines you could get for 6000 euros  ;D

What price nostalgia?
If they had been as brilliant as all that surely they would still be making something BSA that it?

I rode a friend's Clubman's Goldie in 1970, fabled RRT2 gearbox and race final drive: had to slip the very heavy clutch until 25+mph, was an absolute pig in town and the light traffic of those days but thumpingly good fun on clear A and B roads. Ian rode it hard from Easter to September, but it needed lots of maintenance during winter.
In the old days flywheels were lightened for power at higher revs... has anyone tried using a heavier flywheel on a modern free-revving motor?

Hoping that the Chinese start production of a kickstart 644cc RFVC motor soon. Aircooled, 1 cyl, 1 carb, flat torque curve.  ;D
So many projects, so little time  :'(

Funnily enough the ABSAF website boasts that you may never need to open up one of their engines... modern technology and all that.

Nice, but there are so many complete bikes available for a similar +vat price and they will probably cover 100,000kms without any non-planned maintenance. ;D
The problem is that none are big air-cooled low-rev singles  :'(
