Title: chain oilers
Post by: johnr on February 01, 2011, 12:54:12 AM
just a quick thread re chain oilers. ive a scottoiler on one of my bikes, but ive also a loobman oiler on another. the loobman wins by being so much cheaper than the scottoiler. anyhow, i bought mine a while back, but noticed on their site that they do some great discounts for block orders. the biggest saving is then you order 12 oilers from them, you only pay for 7 and get 5 free, making them a unit price of under a tenner each! bloody good value for an oiler i recon. anyhow, ive just done a block order of a dozen for the kat club, and got an email from loobman telling me they are bringing out a new improved version of the oiler, where instead of squeezing a small bottle to oil the chain, you just press a button and a measured ammount of lube flows to the bikes chain, they are currently doing them as an alternative to the old type for the same price, though they arent officially being launched for a month or 2 yet. anyhow, i just point this out cos i know how mych my thumper hammer their chains and for under a tenner a shot, i dont think these can be beaten. is there any interest in doing a block buy of a dozen units over here like we have done in the kat club? i recon that with the postage out to you from me, they will be 11 quid each posted, saving a fiver or so on the list price. is there interest here?  im prepared to make the order if there are a dozen people prepared to paypal me the money, and i will then post them out to whoever wants one.
whatcha think?

I've had the double sided version of the Loobman on my XBR for a few years ( also on the GN250 commutor when I had it) and they are an excellent bit of kit - simple but very effective. Just remember not to give the bottle a squeeze within about 10 miles of parking up or you may end up with an oil patch on the floor!

I use a bottle of the cheapest car oil I can find with the XBR as it has an 'O' ring chain, but I used to use old engine oil on the cheapo GN chain - 'O' rings don't like old engine oil!!!

Otherwise I can't fault them.

I had one of those on my XBR. I took it off when I fitted new swingarm bushes and never got round to refitting it. It beats paying £80 for a Scottoiler but it did have a tendency to fling oil all over my back tyre if I was a wee bit oversqueezy with it.

Do you remember a couple of years ago a chap posted a link to instructions here for building one out of junk? I still have the instructions somewhere. I always meant to have a crack at it but never got round to it, I'm pretty sure I have all the required junk in the garage and still have the destructions knocking around somewhere.

Did anyone here ever build one?

To be honest most of the loobman kit wouldn't be hard to make, a small shampoo bottle, windscreen wiper tubing, a few cable ties and a bit of wire.  The clever bit is the the end piece that dispenses the oil - only a bit of moulded plastic but it does the job very well.  I did try and make one (one sided) with an old needle valve from a footpump but it wasn't very successful.  For the price he charges, especially buying bulk it's not worth messing around.

Two big medical syringes. Syringe A is filled with used engine oil and given a squeeze drops 10 ml of oil into B via fish tank tube which has had the plunger removed and used a grommet to hold the hose. From B the hose goes down the swing arm to a Y (also a bit fo fish tank) into which are glued two lengths of WD40 red straw. The oil runs by gravity from B out the Y onto the chain.

You can't buy all this for a tenner, so if I didn't already have it set up, I'd buy.

Scotoilers are a joke even before they start with 60-quid a go a driling into your carb!

I bought the instructions for the home made version but it never worked right. Capillary action seemed to drain all the oil out to form a puddle under the bike.

If your ordering the new version with the buttony bit count me in ;D

lubemans work extremly well for the money,i have one fitted to the bmw650 but if you have a bike with the chain on the right hand side like the bm or pegasso, if there is some oil left in the tube and you park it on the side stand it will run all over the rear tyre. i made a copy of the lubeman and fitted it to my superdream with the chain on the left hand side and have no problem at all. in my opinion they are great value for money even if you have to pay full price for it.

ok, there seems to be the interest, i'll get a batch ordered when ive had the kat club ones and sent them out.
just to clarify,
im no connection to lubeman, im making nowt from this, i bought a batch for the kat club and advertised them at a tenner each. in factr when i added the postage, i was actually making a loss, that is to say, by the time i have posted them, they will have cost me money!, hence im saying 11 quid each for you guys, anything left over afterwards i will drop in as a donation to nabd. im only doing this cos its a good deal for folk from this club.
so, when the kat clubs batch are sent out, i will sort you guys out. i recon it will be the weekend before theyre all sorted, so by mon i will be ready to sort out you thumper club guys.

Aye johnr,

Make sure you cover yursel' for the postage! Nothing worse, it's the same when I pack stuff for Fleabay and haven't allowed enough for P&P in the weight of bubble wrap!

Donation of surplus P&P to the charity of your choice is fine and my thanks for your effort and time.

ok, just so you know where we are with this, ive been in contact with loobman, the oilers are ordered, and paid for, and we are now in the hands of royal mail!! what he has asked is if he can have pictures of the oilers fitted to the bikes, just for the gallery on his site, as he hasnt any customer pics of the new oiler yet, as its not really been released yet. so, watch this space.

so, depends if theses the interest any more

ok, so the saga drags onwards, ive just heard back from denis at loobman, it seems that our order got taken out by his spam filter, so he hadnt recieved it, or he had, but he didnt know that he had. this was confused slightly by him having had another order from me for the kat clubs oilers just 3 days before, anhow, its sorted now, and they are finally on their way to us..... i hope!! sorry bout the delay, i hadnt anticipated this, but ive kept you all up to date with everything as soon as ive got it. as for another order, well, theres a couple of guys on the kat club forum who still want one, so if we can muster the interest between the 2 forums, we can do another block order. essentially, i need 6 of you to show an interest, and 6 of them to do the same.

Thanks for the update John, perseverance!

With 2" of nasty sleety/slushy excrescence yesterday, I'm going nowhere on two-wheels at present and have to many other balls in the air to look after the brood! ;)

Maybe if the current 'CONDEM' lot can decide what they are going to do with 'our' trees, I might be able to plan a life! However, you can't plan the outcome!

Dear Andy,

I believe that I'm already in Group 1, having paid for a pair of the wee dodgers! (See page 1, Reply #14 on: February 02, 2011, 12:26:42 AM ). Just thanking John for his update, not ordering more than the initial two.  ;) I may have a fleet, but not 'that' many!  :o

ok guys, to avoid any confusion, and believe me its getting confusing here, im gonna open another thread about oilers and name it 'batch 2' anyone who wants one, add their name to the list there not here, and when we have 12, which i think the thumper club can probably muster on its own, i will order another batch of a dozen.

so, if you want one, just register your interest on the other thread. DONT SEND ANY PAYMENT YET!!  sorry, im trying not to tie myself up in confusion, with one block of oilers for the kat club already sent, another for here in the post to me hopefully and then yet another possibly pending. it gets a bit muddled when added to the other hassles of life. i will take payment and order another batch only when the 12 im waiting for have been dispatched to their new owners.

Sorry for the confusion bill, my mistake!

Fabulous mate, both of us!

I feel there will be a bit of maintainance in the post at some point.  If nothing else goes wrong before spring, then it will be all fluids (axle, box, engine, coolant) and greasing the front suspension.  A couple of weekends I suppose for the whole lot.

But that should do it for 6 months, before getting the grease gun out again.  Reasonably labour intensive??  Yes, but thats British engineering!!

cheers for now, hope all is well with you and yours in Gods Country!
