Was at the Edinburgh Camera Obscura the other day and they had a thermal imaging camera which projects the results on a screen in front of you, in the link below we have a pic of Smudge in his cold weathr walking clothes, made me wonder if that sort of thing would be useful to see just *how* good our winter bike gear is...

Been trying convince the boss to get one for a year. Want to point one at various bits of machinery to see how the bearings are doing (some of which might even be work related).
They seem to have about 250 colours and you can set the scale so they use than range over anything from 50 degrees to 3000. If that camera was set so a face at 37 degrees is red and the air is blue, the clothing is within (guess) 5 degrees of ambient, so the heat is pretty much staying in.

yaeh Andy, makes sense, but why the colour difference from green to blue on the front of the trousers?

Looks like the best insulated areas are boots and jacket.
Used to use thermal imaging on helicopter patrols of the 400kV system, looking for hot connections: any resistance over 20 micro-ohms became hot: 20 micro x 400 kV @ 1,600Amps = a lot above ambient temperature!
Lancashire/Yorkshire police used to borrow our kit to do "hidden grave" scans of the moors.

Two reasons, firstly the thighs and, erm... above(!) are larger muscles carrying a lot more blood than the shins so will gve out more heat, secondly (and possiby more important in this instance) I was wearing gaiters ;)
Jacket incidentally is a snugpack sleeka which is a *very* good insulator.
