Title: A week too early?
Post by: guest7 on November 28, 2010, 12:24:32 PM
Perhaps it's because I'm more of a sidecarrist than a solo rider or maybe because I still have that weird winter rally gene, but it occurs to me that it would have been brilliant riding to and camping at Llanthony Priory this weekend rather than last weekend, given the all-time low temperature for Wales and snow everywhere.

Anyone who has been there will appreciate that it must be magical in the snow.

Not to do down last weekend's camp-out in any way, but it's one of my ambitions to get up there in deep snow.

Totally agree !

Have been snowed upon a couple oy years ago whilst there !
Didnt come to much.....Shame !

The owner of Treats, the burger van across the road was saying exactley the same thing when we were there last week.

She also has a smashing Photo of The Priory in the snow up on the wall of her room where we go to sit in the warm and consume Bacon, sausage, egg sandwiches and home made Lemon Drizzle cake washed down with mugs of Tea and Coffee.

Never mind Been playing with my new toy today instead.

Might shoot one for you If I ever get that good !   ;)

Having a go at Archery.....waiting for the comments now !

There is a site out towards Chepstow where the owner has set up a course in some woods.
Basically wander around and shoot at animal Targets.

Then various targets scattered around a field.
None of this standing around shooting at Butts.
Not unless you bend over and offer a target.
Some of the guys turn up with proper Long Bows 90-130lbs draw.
Makes my little 34lbs recurve bow childs play.

Did a bit of archery years ago. Loved it. Relaxing and frustrating at the same time. Good on you Robin.

Strange but true.. shooting live quarry with bows in the UK is illegal  :-\

"Field Target" archery as described by Jethro Longstride is however perfectly fair (and tres cool  ;D)

SWMBO is an archery instructor and I used to do a bit of airgun FT shooting, (Hunter Field Target, or HFT is thoroughly recommended btw for anyone after a bit of responsible fun airgun sport)

Finally, you have a legitimate excuse for those green tights  you've worn in secret for years. Oh dear  >:( :-[, I now have this mental picture of Jethro striding about the woodland in clingy green tights and matching red cod piece.  :-X :-\

Rob

I'm guessing you're using the term 'matching' very loosely indeed  ;) :D

Just as a curious, planning to ride up and over Gospel Pass to Hay tomorrow, anyone know what the pass is like at the moment?

As the closest TCer to the Gospel Pass I think it's the very least that Steve H could do to get home from work, dive into his biking gear and do a recce in the dark  ;) :D :D :D :D

Snow overnight and sleet Saturday morning prevented any bike travel on that day, and I got dragged around the hell that is Cardiff.
Anyway, Sunday was much more pleasant so we togged up and headed off.
Nice run through the lanes up to Llanvihangel Crucorney, then off up towards Llanthony and Hay beyond. There was some snow and ice around, but not much, though it was increasing as we passed Cwmyoy. Past the Priory turn off and the roads got a little worse with an increase of snow and ice in the middle. This section hadn't seen any sunlight yet and after negotiating a couple of humpback bridges and narrower roads the road was getting worse still. I decided that enough was enough and we should turn around, as we came to a stop the roads proved to be icier than I had thought and as the bike slid to a standstill I had to plant my boot into the verge to keep us upright. The worn down sections where cars had travelled were just like glass, and the centre snowy section was hard ice.

We turned around and headed back to the Priory for teacakes and a sneaky half in the cellar bar.

The Priory was quiet, only us and a couple of locals in the bar, and some walkers around the Priory. I took this which I think looks quite Escher like?

After a pipe smoke and wander we headed off.
On the way back there is a road which climbs up to some (closed) woods and someone's house, I've been up there before out of curiousity, and this time it was covered in almost virgin. Too much fun to resist. I had no idea if we'd actually make it up, bare in mind I'm on 95% road biased tyres and have a pillion.
Well we did, chugged up just fine in second but whilst standing up it was noticeable the difference a pillion made when the back end started fishtailing a little. We stopped at the top where there is a fork and I said to Michelle that we'd turn around and head back down.
Cue moving off, starting to turn and finding that we'd caught the sloped edge of the verge at which point the tyres said 'Enough!' and over we slid.
Whoops.
This is Michelle giving me the look that she repeated as "you're an idiot"

I hit the kill switch as we went over so then it was just a case of picking the bike up and checking over then firing back up. Of course I shouldn't have expected any help...

Then to get moving. The tyre was just spinning up so I walked it up and around.

before remounting and heading back down. Michelle had decided to walk back down.  : blackeye

Then we headed back home where I gave the bike a full strip clean and waxoyl. Anyway, it was bound to happen at some point, and I'm just glad it happened on soft snow.
