When I was a wee nipper of about 11, I saw Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind at the cinema and thought it was fantastic.
On a whim, I rented the film and watched it again. Oh dear, another one of my fond childhood memories has been shattered. It has lost all it's charm and now appears quite amateurish with quite annoying characters.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time this has happened to me over movies, so am quite scared to watch another one from my youth. :(
Anyone else suffer like this?

In a bizarre twist of life, when I was young (about the same time as the original post above) I endured Dr Zhivago with my parents as it was on the TV. I was not impressed.
Now, I own a copy and enjoy it thoroughly!

I suffer that with computer games more at the moment.
Might be a little young for it to happen with films yet.
There was one that felt like a fast paced shoot em up with no real point to it.
I bought it thinking it'd be a laugh.
the graphics are poor even compared to older games
its slow
its not fun
we used to play it for hours on end.

In reply to HC, surely the film (CEOTTK) hasnt changed at all, its just maybe your perception of it all? Remember film effects have moved on in leaps and bounds since that film was made (1977 I think). What would it be like if made today? Mr Spielberg did a marvellous job then and still does now (although this could be a Marmite thing). I hardly think its fair to insinuate its a bad film with poor (amateurish) acting and annoying characters. Have you and your opinions changed with the times? This is not meant to be a criticism, merely an observation

I used to love Wim Wender's arthouse classic 'Wings of Desire' and always raved about it to Mrs Onepot. I re-watched it recently and it is just self-indulgent pretentious tosh. I haven't dared watch any of his other films (Alice in the Cities, Kings of the Road, Paris Texas, etc.) just in case they too are shite.
Having said that, the opening chords of the Only Ones 1978 punk classic 'Another Girl, Another Planet' still quicken my heart and start me twitching. Not all memories are flawed.

It is all a strange thing this perception lark. My opinions have changed over time as I have apparently matured a little since '77.
The ceottk film special effects are not what was at stake in my perturbations, rather the constantly screaming children and daft behaviour of some of the characters. It all seemed too melodramatic at times even allowing for the fact that aliens were coming.
Some films from my younger days still entertain me, for example Star Wars, & Superman to pick two from the same time as ceottk, so not all is lost!! ;D

My thoughts on Close Encounters were (and are), it had a brilliant first half and then got dull. The truck at the rail crossing bit is an iconic image after all.
If you want to see a bad film, watch Eddie Kidd in 'Riding High', it's terrible. Having said that, I watched an Eddie Kidd compilation on YouTube the other night and he really was a rather good rider, especially given the limitations of the bikes he jumped. Why do you think we (bikers) never really took him to our heart? Was it the slightly camp jump suits? Perhaps Kidd is also in need of a re-evaluation, a 70s character that is actually better than we gave him credit for at the time.
btw, on the compilation I watched he was wheelying a thumper show bike of some description, anyone remember what it was?

A friend forced me to borrow some film with "the rock" in it the other day.
Something about a single man who didnt know he had a daughter but turns out hes a great dad.
My wife said to read the synopsis and lie.
In the end I watched it 30 mins at a time.

As I said, apparently! I now have to pay adult fares on trains and stuff and dont get challenged for being under 25 in the off-licence >:(

I know what you mean. music however, is another kettle of fish. i was born in the seventies, but barring a brief spell in the ninetees, and the add band now and then i almost exclusively listen to stuff that was either before rmy time or i would have been too young to remember. amazing how some media such as films and games dull with age but others such as music weirdly seem to get better? led zep 2 anyone?

If I had to get rid of all my music bar one group, Zep would be still there, covers so much. Or would it be Tull? Maybe Fleetwood Mac, or the Floyd - bugger you are right!!!
