Title: Start the week topic
Post by: guest7 on August 02, 2010, 10:01:30 PM
I was pondering my festering fleet of tatty XBRs today and it came to me that I don't know what I could buy today that would do the same job, I can't think of any decent road-styled singles.

The MT03 is close to what I'd want, but its upright riding position and wide bars aren't my first choice.

Have I forgotten something or isn't there a sporty single made today?

Must admit I am not keen on the MT03 myself.
And I cant think of a road/sporting single at all ! At least not in fairly recent years.
Plenty of twins..but not a Thumper that is practical and good for all round use

The Honda FMX....?  Super Motard type thing...but with little get up and go !

I'm sure a thumper supermoto would be the best fun on a twisty road, but it's still not the classic feet-back, head-down riding position that some of us feel comfortable with.

These hot 450 racers look the bollocks, but I'm a six footer and I just don't fit on them.

I'm not even sure what options are open to someone wanting to build a caff racer single with a modern lump, given all the FI and electronic jiggerypokery that you would need to find space for in a new frame.

Perhaps the only option is to do what the 450 racer kit companies do, they take the basic frame and motor from an MX thumper and add new subframes, yokes and forks, etc. But crikey, what would that cost?

I think CCM are still doing 400cc liquid cooled singles in various guises - Suzuki motor, if I recall. The cafe racer model is pretty nice although perhaps not great if you're 6 foot. They do a 710cc supermoto thing that looks a lot of fun if not very practical. I've no idea if they're any good though.

Anybody know if the new fuel-injected, low-emission Enfields are any good?

Surely any bike could sit in the garage and collect dust. ;)

SV650, granted it's not a single, but development is market led and the punters don't want single cylinder roadbikes anymore.
Either that or the Kwak ER6. A great little bike, only let down by poor suspension.

There is Mac motorcycles which were gonna use the Buell engine.
I dont know what they have gone with now.

I think I'd go with an Indian Royal Enfield if I wanted a new single.

How about those CR&S 'Vun' things? Very pretty modern sporty single, 650 BMW/Rotax-made engine. A bit rich for my pocket but I wouldn't say no.
