Title: liner swap
Post by: tuggy on June 17, 2010, 01:28:08 PM
Hi,does anyone know how to swap the liner from one barrel to another,is it an engineering shop job? This is for a dr250 that needs a new top end, unfortunately the replacement barrel is missing the fixings for the electric start, hence the need to swap liners.
thanks tuggy.

Aye tuggy,

How good an engineer are you?

Do you have a surface plate?

Do you have a press (10tonne)?

Do you have an understanding spouse, girlfriend, 'partner', or yoursel', whom doesn't mind the odd bit of metal being heated in the oven, whilst other bits lie cooling in the freezer? ::)

If you have a wibble about any of these may I suggest you find a friendly experienced engineer first and ask to watch and learn, after which you will supply dosh and maybe some liquid refreshment and see how things develop!  ;)

I hope this helps, Bill.

No, you don't need a 10-ton press! Just heat the barrel to 350 in an oven, with the aluminium supported and the liner free to drop. If it doesn't drop out of its own weight, a sharp rap with a big mallet should do it.

Yeep...done so myself several times!
Protect the liner with a piece of wood and a 3kg hammer will get it out....
