Ii have just been bought a new laptop that runs windows 7 My old PC has Windows XP. I want to transfer my files and stuff from the old PC. Windows 7 has an easy transfer thing but although I saved them all to a hard drive using the easy transfer I don't seem able to make the new laptop find them to copy over. You can see the files but it just wont connect to them.
Any ideas
Thanks Ken

Save yourself time & hassle & bung all your files on a USB memory stick. You mean you don't have a backup copy on an external device (CD/DVD/Ext HD etc.) in case of HD failure anyway? If I had a penny for the number of times I've had tearful bods telling me they've lost their entire life with no backups ........ Rule 1 - back it up, then backup the backup just in case, then make a copy of that backup to be safe .....

Thanks for that.
I have an external hard drive to save stuff on but the difficult part for me is getting my favorits and outlook address book and calendar into the new version .

have you tried the 'file and settings transfer wizard' ?
this is available on XP and '7'....look in start-all programs-accessories-system tools..
run it on your xp machine first....... it's fairly user friendly....it will create a single compressed file which you can put onto a cd
put the cd into the new '7' pc and reverse the process...it will restore your desktop and all your settings to your new machine
ideally, any programs you have on your 'old' pc will need to be set up on your 'new' pc then after the transfer all your desktop icons should work ok.
Any probs give drop me a line

Sorry I have just go to say it....
It seems easier to move the files from an XP / Vista etc PC onto an OS X Mac than between two MS OS machines. Connect the cable, hit the tit and sit back. Or am I missing something.
Not a helpful answer I know.

Hello
What happens with windows 7 is it loads a file transfer thing onto both computers. I spent 8 hours coping everything across only to find the new pc wont find the file. Its mainly the favorits and address book and my calendar. the rest I can work out. last two times i retyped every one :'(
Thanks Ken

Hi Ken,
I presume by favourites you mean ones from Internet Explorer? There is usually an option to import/export files (under File on the ancient IE version 6 I'm running here on my works laptop). It should be possible to export to a file from the browser on your old PC, transfer it to the new one (memory stick, portable drive, etc.) and then import it again.
If your addressbook and calendar details are hel in something like Outlook or Outlook Express you should be able to do a similar thing.

Hello
I had a chat with SONY and they said it cant be done. I find this very supprising though. On XP and 98 i could go through the file until I found the favorits and then move them to the new version .On Win 7 I don't seem to be able to dig into the files to find the location.
Yes i do mean in outlook. It asks you to load a easy transfer file but all this does in puts it onto the new PC not in its place.
Thanks ken

Thanks for that.I have the folder with the favorites in it on my new Win7 but I still seem to have the problem of finding the location of the favorits folder on Win7 to bring in my stored favorits. Or am I missing something here. Spent 4 hours re typing all of my contacts so that's done. I don't fancy the idea of coping about 300 favorits.
Thanks Ken
