Hi
Here's good one for you technical types , after many years of happy XBR riding i decided to buy a Dominator off Ebay , the bike is great apart from it just will not tickover , so far i've fitted a new plug , cleaned the airfilter , stripped and cleaned the carb , replaced the carb , set the valves clearances , and replace the stupid side stand switch , but still no tickover , the bike starts straight up from cold and hot , it will fast idle on choke , and if the tickover screw is turned up to about 1800 rpm it will tickover , the bike does not splutter it just stops , very frustrating and bloody scary in traffic , any idea's .

when it dies, can you open the throttle and 'catch' it, to get it running again?
also when it dies do any of the idiot lights die?
is the rev counter electric or cable?

Have a good look at the rubber flex between the head and the carb. they tend to split right under the botton edge. You may need a mirror to see it.

Agree with kerabo, gs550 of mine had a fine crack in the rubber on the petrol vacuum pipe from the tap (if you have one)which stopped a good flow from the petrol tap.A new bit of rubber hose to the carb sorted all.Hope this helps.

HI All and thanks for the replies
i can catch it and keep the revs up, but thats way up the rpm scale, the idiots lights stay on and it has an electric rev counter , no vac tap on this model . i've ordered a new rubber inlet tube from Dave Silvers , 36 quid ouch , i've also put he original carb in boiling water and simmered it for about 30 mins with all the rubber stuff removed , i'm told this should shift any gunge in the airways , so now the carb is cleaned out and ready to refit ,just waiting for the inlet rubber to arrive , sorry for the slow reply , i've been trying to loggin to this site for three days , i think i have an over active firewall >:(

You would have seen the perrished part of the tube. From memory they go right under the front where it joins the head. It may not look like a hole till you flex it. (what are idiot lights)

A common trick is to spray WD40 over the effected area whilst the engine is running. If there are any cracks in the rubber then the WD40 will block them, thereby stopping air being drawn in, and the engine will run better for a short period.

Hi Ken
Idiot lights are the little lights on the dashboard , turn signal highbeam neutral etc , and the side stand down light . thanks for wd40 tip Steve. ;)

Hi All
The inlet rubber finaly arrived from Silvers , this was fitted aswell as the boiled and cleaned carb , i set the mixture screw two and a half turns out , the bike will now tickover , so out for a test rider , the bike pulls fine but cuts out on coming to a stand still , it will start straight up and tick over , i gues this is a mixture thing , i will have to try adjusting the mixture screw in and out , have any of you guys tried a color tune device ? , it might be hard to get it into the plug hole on an Dommi though .

The NX650 is prone to cutting out when you come to a stop. it most likley is mixture but I feel its because of the temp change of the engine and the mixture not correct when hot .Its also a B....... to adjust.I keep mine ticking over quiet fast and so long as its not be ridden real hard it will normaly idle OK. I fitted a dynojet kit that helped as well.

Hi Ken
Thanks for the reply , i will turn the mixture screw in a quarter turn and richen it up a bit on idle , it is a bit fidly to get at the screw , Honda make a special tool for adjusting these screws , i have one for my CBX's they have six carbs to fiddle with !!! . the new NX problem is it's dumping oil down either the breather pipe from the cam box or it's coming down the over flow pipe from the oil ressy in the frame , i have these both venting into a small bottle at the moment , luckily it didn'tdump it on the back tyre ?? , maybe a mug full came out on a 70 mph 10 mile run , the oil shows half way down the dips tick , i think maybe one of the inline oil filters is blocked , any thoughts ?.
