Title: Starter idle gears..XBR
Post by: pete on March 23, 2010, 07:49:12 PM
Just thought i would check the state of play inside the starter idle gears,as i undone the bolts, a grey oil-petrol mix sept out around the casing? As the cover seems to have never been off before and not wanting a bigger problem, i let the worst drain out and put the bolts back in.The cover seems bl@#dy hard to shift. Any idea whats going on in there?

                                                                                                                  Cheers Pete.

Cheers bud! I'm thinking it may be rain water etc leaking in past the starter motor? :-\

FWIW I took the cover off my gears to take them out, as the clutch has failed , and the oil in mine was grey in colour .

The oil in the tank is nice and clean looking so suspect that in the idler gear area it does not get much of a "flow" of oil and the old oil emusifies as it sits there ? 8)

Will take the motor off at a later date but trying to stop the tank leaking now................ :(

Hi Bojer, same thing in mind. The oil seems clear enough in the engine, was wondering if the lube was supposed to circulate and refresh? Will need to do an oil change soon, when the weather allows. ::)

I have a tank if you get stuck-

I bought an xbr and rode it back from Edinburgh to Derby a few months back. It needs paint and is a bit flaky inside but there was no leaks

The emulsion is usual caused by condensation, too many short trips not allowing the engine to warm up fully. A comnmon problem with that type of piggy back starter.
