Title: What part?

This photo was used in The Guardian last week. It's a lovely shot but I'm not entirely sure of what they have in their hands, is it a drive belt? I would expect a belt to be sectioned or ridged, but the item appears to be smooth (but then what would I know?). It was dated 1919.

Prefer the belt scenario.

Why else do you stick the stand on the verge and drop the front wheel down on the road, other than to give you that extra bit of height to spin the wheel and raise the edge of the rim so that you don't bend your back so far?

This URL gives you a better idea of what the belt might look like.

I thought belts were made of twisted leather. When the belt eventually stretched, the rider would dismount, remove the metal clip thingy that joined the ends and put a few more twists in to take up the slack.I'll have to consult Ixion!

Got it!!  If you look at the field behind there are some interesting plants.  It is the AA mobile members bong, for when the stresses of the ride get too much.

And how many weeks did he stand there waiting for the AA man just to happen past?
