I have been offered one of the above and I was wondering if anyone had any experience of these bikes - foibles and or things to watch out for?

As a yoof, my good friend Tim had one which we customised. It was a good solid bike, and went well. I'm afraid that's all I can offer. I like them. His sounded great through gutted peashooters.

Hi Steff, I had an XJ650 for a short time (couldn't reach the ground... get it? short time.) as I see it the two main problems I had were as with most Yamahas ,you MUST have 12v at the electronics. This means all the terminals, and plugs. mine were slightly corroded so I had to clean them and all went well. The other thing I had problems with, were the interior chain guides for the cam chain and starter chain, these had fatigue cracks which allowed a piece of tensioner to flake off and caused the timing chain to snap. The backfires and flames around my legs sort of indicated to me something went amiss. I had only ridden it for about 15 kays with no rattles or bangs. Luck of the draw I spose but what can one expect for $450 bucks and registered.
The S/H motor I bought out of a wreck to rebuild mine ALSO had these fatique cracks.
Check with the local owners if this is a common problem with the 550's as well.
Once rebuilt it was bullet proof, except I had problems holding it up. nother story for another time. I got $2000 bucks for it as a trade on the MuZ
