Title: Viewing Profiles
Post by: Steve H on February 10, 2010, 03:57:27 PM
Its been pointed out in another thread that its not possible to view other peoples profiles on the forum. I am reluctant to add this permission without a consensus agreement to do so. The options we have are
a) Leave it as it as I wish my profile to remain private
b) Grant the permission to view profiles to memebrs who have posted a certain number of messages on the forum, this would hopefully stop someone joined and trawling for profile details.
c) Just open up the permission to everyone regardless of how many posts they have made.

Either respond to this thread or PM me. No response will indicate no change required

Well, as I was one of the folk that raised it, i never imagined that no one could see any of the profiles  :o what a funny way of going on that is ? makes a bit of a mockery of having a profile attached !....mind you, it's a good excuse not to fill it in  ;)
I have to say, that my main interest in being able to see a profile revolves around getting an insight into which part of the country someone is in, which s useful when talking about buying, selling, casual & formal Meets / Ride Outs etc.
Makes no odds otherwise, I guess, but at least I know it's nothing personal now.
Plan B is always good, whatever the alternative options.
Also leads to the amusing trait of folks posting 99 one word posts, so they can build up their tally to be 'inclusive'..... ::) ;D

Like all other profiles on all other forums/sites I frequent, the only restriction is if you are a logged in member. As said previously, why bother having it, I know who I am and dont need to remind myself why I am here. However its up to the individuals as to how much they want to share.
I'll settle for a "B"

Hint: never never never list your birthdate. Some institutions use this as an identifier when checking out credentials.

On second thought... Ive just looked at my profile and noticed that this profile is sort of different to the others and is only suitable for private use. change mine to "A" and maybe consider doing a "profile" where we can list our details EG hobbies, ICQ, Messenger Email and personal details photos etc that we may want to share.
Any other ideas anyone?

A is fine by me.

It'd be nice to see where everyone is in the country, it could be as vague as you wanted. I wouldn't mind Llanelli being put under my name with each post.

Other than that as long as we are able to email or pm members if needed, thats fine.

I can't see that it matters much, yes it's easier for buying, selling and meet ups but other than that, I spose you could be as vague as you wanted. I'm not fussed either way.

Most other forums (fora?) I'm with have a '10 posts or more' rule which works OK - so that'll be a B from me.

Ultimately, being pragmatic, those who prefer the 'A' option, don't need to fill anything in, the profile details aren't obligatory.  I always fill in the age / DOB thing.....but then I am only 23  ;) :o ::) :D

Strikes me theres nothing in the profile anyway - so long as you don't release your email address or date of birth.

The visibility of your email address can be controlled by yourself, and as mentioned the other fields can be left empty if you wish.

Option B, preferably with a threshold of not less than 79 posts  ;)

Probably a B for me, though as has been pointed out it could be useful sometimes to see a posters rough location under their name/avatar should they choose to add it  :)

Option "B".
I can't see the problem, if you have any information you don't want to make public then don't add it to your profile.
I joined this club because it covers a subject close to my heart, and that includes the motorcyclists (any girls on here?) not just motorcycles.
The Norton club publishes a sort of members list willing to assist in the event of a breakdown away from home. I would be willing to allow my mobile number and or email to be used to assist other members in trouble. For all I know another member could live a couple of miles away and we are missing out on mutual help / fun.
Minimum posts, Why? log on or no view.
regards Bob
