I finally found full details of this item in an old copy of 'Flemings Modern Medical Aids". I quote:

"Although its intent is to be applauded, in its early form the German-made 'Eindringling' anal probe has one major drawback. Despite its extensive and pioneering use of a water heating element to facilitate user comfort the device, being some 6" in width, was extremely difficult to insert in the patient's anal passage. As an aside, the inventor, J. B. B. B. Keenan, refuses to this day to acknowledge this fact. Herr Keenan will gladly demonstrate its operation to interested parties, but most practitioners were unable to achieve similar results 'in the field'. The company bowed to the pressure put upon it by the medical profession and in May of 1905 unveiled the 'Excelsior' model which more closely resembles the type of probe in use today. Few examples of the first model survive in public hands, although many 'Eindringling's are believed to remain in private use."

I hope that clears up the mystery

I was halfway through photoshopping the image when it occurred to me that I might be a bit sad  :D :D :D :D

Anyway, here's question number 2... why is this hammer made like this?

I think its to hammer the anal probe in if it gets stuck and you dont want to put too much pressure on it

Bloody hell Ken, you're on fire today!  :D

Yes indeed, it's a hammer made to fit onto a prosthetic arm in place of the false hand. I imagine it was always wise to remember what tool was fitted at the time, the combination of a craft knife and crotch itch not being a happy one.

Have a friend who scratched an itch by his eye with the end of his pen.  Only it was not a pen it was a dissection scalpel.  It left an interesting scar but thankfully missed his eye.

What about  Abu Hamza the muslim cleric. He was on a plane going to the USA to stand trial and went to the toilet. He was in there ages and the crew was worring he may have a bomb so broke down the door. When asked why he was so long he said you want to try wiping you arse with 2 hooks :)

A friend lost an arm in a Motorcycle accident and I welded several tools to the NHS hand adaptors to enable him to work on his bike.
