SteveD has given me one potential solution, but I thought I'd still put it out for discussion.
My CB500 needs its centrestand replaced and I have been completely unable to get the bloody spring back on. My old bodge of using a long stout phillips screwdriver failed miserably, the spring is just too strong (I should say 2 springs as there are two, one inside the other).

Have you tried looping a piece of nylon rope through the hook on the end of the spring and getting a willing volunteer to tug on it while you manhandle it into place with your screwdriver?

Bend the spring one way to open up the coils and stuff a coin in one of the gaps, bend it the other way stuff another coin in, keep doing this untill the spring holds enough coins to stretch the spring far enough to refit, then pull the coins out.

Throw the centre stand away and buy a paddock stand instead?

once before i connected the spring to the stand, before connecting the stand to the bike. its usually easier to get a big old lever bar to move the stand, rather than try and move the end of the spring without losing a finger.
last week i managed to head-butt the kickstart on my c90 whilst trying to fit the centre stand spring, oh how i laughed! never before has a small bike been sworn at quite so much.
