Hi one and all...Im relatively new to the forum and Im usually building a bike rather than writing about them, but this time I may need some help, technical info or other advice. Im thinking of building a sort of special but some of you wizards will probably laugh. I have been offered some SRX parts including a few twinshock frames and a "good" monoshock engine including oil tank(I dont know the specific model numbers but Im sure someone on here will be able to rattle them off!)
Questions
1) Is this a viable project without too many mods, or am I living in a dreamworld? as I dont remember seeing anyone trying this before?
2) number 1 is the only one I have at the moment as I havent started just yet..Im just sort of dipping my toe in the water at the mo.
Any help, guidance, direction, information or other will be gratefully appreciated (either by pm or in open forum)

My previous effort at rebuilding an SRX 4 wasnt too bad....It was sold to TJ63 earlier this year

Nah, you dont want the monoshock engine, horrible things. As you dont want it, I may be interested in taking it off your hands as it will replace my knackered one (starter clutch very suspect) .... though it all depends on where you are, if you are willing to part with it, and how much. That is assuming it really is a good one?!

You will find that the watercooled xt600 engine has been put into a twinshock frame as has an electric start monoshock engine, have a look through some of the Holland pictures!

The monoshock (lecky start motor) will go into the twinshock frame, but (I think) the sprocket is offset by about 8mm. Not insurmountable, but you may need to get a bit clever with custom sprockets.
I think the 660 motor has slightly offset lower engine mounts, also requires a bit of cleverness!
And the waterpump on the front of the supremely ugly 660 motor will also foul the front RH downtube on the twinshock SRX frame. Indeed the crafty dutchman has done it (its a peach) but you'll need to fabricate a kink in the tube (but it unbolts, so its all good)

As far as I recall they never made a water cooled XT600 motor. The water cooled derivative was a 660 or 659 to be precise.

To be Precise, they never SOLD or offered for sale a water cooled 600, who knows what they made in the workshop?

andy230 is right, there is a sprocket offset (10mm) you can get a sprocket made up at little expense, but as it has been said, 'orrible engine.......too many things to go wrong (and often do)
stick an aircooled engine in there....srx or xt..much better

SteveL; i'll second that.
the xt air cooled 600 is a far nicer engine than the 660 water cooled lump.
the 660 has to be revved to work, and then feels horrible when you do so. the 600 is a lovely thumper that can pull from low-down and is what most people want from a single.

I originally asked if the Monoshock SRX400 engine would go into the SRX 4/600 Twinshock frame, without too many mods.
After having looked at the 2 engines today I see there is approx 15m/m difference between the (sprocket centres) to the (centreline of the crankcases) measurement
ie Twinshock sprocket - 90 m/m
Monoshock sprocket -105 m/m
(measured from engine c/line to outside of sprockets)
These are approximate measurements and need to be verified with the engine and rear sprocket/rear wheel in the frame with wheels aligned..... Its looking awkward already :-\

Lets wait and see......in the mean time how about me buying your knackered monoshock bike complete? Now that sounds more realistic! and Im sure I could do something with it ;D ;) ;D
