If only it was that simple :),apparantly the "spoke rings" are a one off, look like there CNC machined.I think GC has made some enquiries into this a while back. When I get some spare time in the winter i'm going to have a go at converting a spare front wheel , even if I have to make the spoke rings myself,I mean how hard can it be ;D.The wheel building bit is no problem I have nearly 30 years of experience with a spoke key.

Ahh, no worries, if you fancy working in partnership on this i can get some centres made up, i just need some dimensions on the spoke hole diameter, profile (or angle to drill at)  & how many spokes will need to be fitted. Perhaps we could knock a couple of sets up for us to test? Let me know what you think.

what size rims were you thinking of running? standard 18"?

These rims would solve my problem of dismantling & powdercoating my original comstars only to try & re-rivet them!!

I also prefer the look & quality of finish for my project.

I spoke to a bloke at Central Wheels at the Uttoxeter show and he said he'd give me his opinion on the dimensions of these rings if I sent him some details. I haven't done this yet, but I'll get onto it this week.

Never mind the wheels what about the black maggot? CX500's were always bloody ugly (I know I had one) but this one is fantastically ugly. Can't get over the fact that the owner went to all that trouble with the wheels on such an ugly dog of a bike - albeit a rat bike! :o

Bit harsh that xbruby don't you think? had several CX's and loved them all (until you had to work on them) I aways thought they had a certain charm in a kinda Lisa Tarbuck sort of way, if you know what I mean.

NO !  I'm afraid not Pat.
CXs are horrendous.
And Lisa Tarbuck.....well I'm not going to comment incase it gets pulled. :D

In the dim and distant when I were a precocious young courier (yes, in the days of black and white, I know I know  ::) ) I had the chance to try a couple of CX's, generally with big ugly white GRP fairings and huge topboxes.
I quickly realised that CX's served a very useful function... when you get off one and back onto your normal bike all the little handling niggles have magically disappeared and you are left with a light lithe responsive joy of a bike... at least compared to the maggot you just climbed off!  :o ;D

Practical, yes
Reliable, yes
Ugly, Oh yes
Fun, sadly, no.

I'd far rather have a cb/gs/er500 for a practical sensible machine, oh and only honda could design a pushrod twin with camchain problems... lol ::)

Oh I dunno, I kinda fancy Lisa chubby chops - or is it just me? Please, please , please don't say yes!  :-\

As for the maggot, it covered 30k in 24 months, including a trip around Europe where it continuously and mysteriously kept catching fire - oh joy! My maggot looked a bit like the rat bike in the photos by the time I got it home. Still at least my chocolate cam chain tensioner didn't give up the ghost.

Lisa T - I would.  Don't forget - sh*gging a "comfortably padded" bird is a lot like riding a Puch Maxi - great fun at the time, but you wouldn't want your mates to find out!

Plastic Maggot - had a 650 Eurosprout a while back, nice, torquey, comfy, still handled like an overweight barge though!

Back on topic (sort of) - is it wrong of me to say I quite like 3/6 spoke Comstars?  Or is that a dirty secret I should keep tucked away with the Lisa Tarbuck (and Caroline Quentin - it's her eyes) fantasies?

Nurse!  The screens!

What Lisa Tarbuck and Caroline Quentin together? Now you're talking!

Ahem, enough of that  ;)

Re: Comstars - I was going to try and buy a set of spoked wheels for my XBR but came to the conclusion that I actually liked the Commies. Look great if they are in good condition.

Now where's my copy of Lisa Tarbuck weekly?

I quite like Lisa T as well....she has a certain charm about her.

Back to the topic, I noted in the picture show that the saddlebags rested in the obligatory way on the silencer. I liked the conversion, very clever to a mere non-lathe-owning mortal.
