Title: Bike trailers
Post by: guest18 on May 27, 2009, 09:12:11 AM
As some may know I am always (for a variety of reasons!) looking at ways I can carry more, or more awkward luggage on my bike(s).
I had briefly looked at bike trailers but the frankly laughable prices from Watsonian or whoever had firmly punted them into the "not on your life" category.

However I chanced across this (look at the bottom of the page) http://www.mzskorpion.net/page13.htm

What genius! Why didn't I think of making a trailer using a roof box  ???
I like...... :)

One consideration is that trailers towed by a solo M/C can only be (iirc) 1 metre wide.

And a weight limit that is mostly taken up by the frame, wheels and towing stuff.

I rather fancied one for the MZ two stroke but they are so light I just couldn't design one light enough.  This idea might help there..........

I think sidecars can tow a trailer up to 1.5 metres wide and pull something daft like two thirds of the weight of the outfit.

One fantastic loophole, probably a hang-over from when people used to tow canoes and small boats with sidecar outfits, is the fact that you can tow a trailer up to 30 foot long  :o

max weight of 450 kilos(unbraked) or upto 2/3rds of the combo weight if the trailer is braked, max width 1.5m, max length from towhitch to end of trailer is 4.5m(i think) and there are some other minor regs too. solo regs are much tighter. though ive seen the outragious sight of a fully decked out wing 1500 solo pulling a trailer tent!!!

One of the neatest trailers I've ever seen was on a Jawa.  It's the proper Jawa CZ trailer and I understand only a handful were ever imported.  Single wheel with indispension type damping. Enough room to get all you're weekend camping kit in and some tinnie's!  I followed one through some Derbyshire twisties once and it handled beautifully.

Indeed, with a very late model 2 stroke behind it I believe.

I've had a bit of a trawl around the internet and the trailer fitted to the Jawa is a PAV.  If you're handy with welder, here is the basic trailer frame...it wouldn't take much making.
