Hi, I am new to the club, having just bought an '85 XBR I would like to fit wire spoked wheels. I read in previous postings where "Onepot" was converting NX wheels, but could not locate a posting of the results. It was also mentioned that CB 400/550 hubs may be able to be built to fit. Can anyone help?

Hi Billy B
Welcome and no I cannot help with the XBR wheels - seems to be a popular conversation

Funnily enough I dug out my CB550 rear wheel the other day with a view to checking it out for fit. It looks to be an easy conversion, but you will probably need to get the hub re-laced to restore offset and/or change the rim to an aluminium one.
Pat has used an NX650 front hub on his cafe racer.
I will post a link to the piccies of the other option someone suggested, fitting alloy rings to bare comstar hubs and lacing up some new rims.

Bollocks, can anyone remember what thread the piccies of the XBR wheel conversion were posted in?

Thanks for the response guys. The idea of the discs fitted to the comstar wheels sounds OK, has any one here done it? Can anyone tell me the dimensions of the discs for taking the spokes?

Can't give you an answer sorry. I thought it might be worth mailing Hagons and/or Central wheels for thoughts on this. I'll try Hagons first because they have a long history of racing conversions and messing about with aluminium.

Just emailed Hagons and I will post their reply as soon as I get it.

I have been asking about here and have been given a number for a wheel builder in Kirkaldy, I may approach him after I see what Hagons say. In the meantime I will talk to the Tank Shop and enquire about the possibility of a "Manx" tank and seat.

If I can get some serious answers about the dimensions of the plates then it may well be worth while getting some laser cut. I'll look into it.

I would be interested in this set up if it was available as ive also been looking for spoked rims for my XBR cafe racer to no avail.

I have just got a Dominator, the intention is to put the engine into the XBR. Could I get new rims and have the wheels built to fit the XBR? The rear disc brake conversion does not look too difficult.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on. I'm fortunate in that my XBR is one with wire wheels, however they could do with a little TLC.

Onepot, you said earlier that "Pat" had used an NX front wheel on his Cafe Racer. I am unsure who Pat is and how did he manage to get the speedo drive geared for the XBR speedo? I am asking because I have picked up an NX to donate its engine for my project.

'Tis I he speaks of! If you use the speedo drive that comes with the dommie wheel it sits on the opposite side to the XBR. This means there is no casting on the slider to prevent it from spinning around with the wheel, but I for one don't worry about this. My reasoning is, I've clamped it firmly in place and it 'butts' against the slider anyway. Also, if anything internally should jam, I'd prefer it to wrench the drive off the cable rather than stop the wheel dead.
As for driving the speedo around in the right direction.....It does. The internal gearing spin the cable the right way to drive the XBR clock. well it did when i simulated it with my drill (can't use the bike cos it's got no engine!)
Spindle's the same diameter front and back and once you sort out the off-set of the rim, the disc on the front line up with the caliper mounted normally up front. As for the rear caliper mounts, I'm still working on this. There is plenty of room between wheel & swingarm, I've just haven't got round to making a template. The Dommie caliper sits above the swingarm and slides along a mini track when adjusting the chain, but the XBR swingarm is tubular so the caliper will have to mount underneath ant utilise a tie bar.
Best of luck with yours, the rate I'm going with mine, you'll be telling me how to finish! ;D
