I know that there are one or two of you who live near Lampeter and a recent R4 program has prompted me to ask, is there really a beast (http://www.lamp.ac.uk/news/press_releases/2009/anthropology_journal.html) on the loose? (apart from Richard's Beemer that is).

well, there's the fire breathing black beast of parc y rhos. Roars like a lion and kicks like a mule. ;D
Nought that any thinking person would take too seriously. If there was it would get seen - a lot - now wouldn't it?

That would be the "Beast of Bont".
Drunken eejits tell tourists tales of a large wild cat of some description living out on Tregaron Bog and the Cambrian Mountains above. Certainly when I was visiting Ty'n Cornel Youth Hostel and chatting to a farmer recently there were three rather nicely filleted sheep in the field next door picked quite clean with their skin spread around them.
And a local scrap merchant, owner of several acres of junk, used to keep a couple of large cats in a caravan as guard animals of some sort. Immediately prior to the Dangerous Wild Animals Act they disappeared.
All this would be described as bollocks my me if it weren't for my wife, a fairly reliable witness I believe, who on driving home from Aberystwyth past Llanddeiniol one night swears that just such a creature loped along the roadside verge next to her before disappearing into a field. Certainly we have sufficient wilderness in the area for a large cat to become virtually invisible - and lots of prey.
On the other hand a chap in Llangadog swore that he had seen his dog fight and be killed by a large cat. Definitely. DNA testing showed it to be a Badger.
So I call for an experiment.
We take a Thumper Club volunteer, strip them naked, tie them to a tree up in the hills and paint them with Felix cat food. We leave them there for a couple of days to sober up then come back and check their well being.
Anybody up for it then ?
So lots of stories, some by trusted folk, but you'll have to make your own mind up.
Cheers,
Richard

The only beast around this neck of the woods is my ex-wife.

No but I was training a bunch of Practice Nurses once - me and a room full of women in uniform mmmmmm - anyway was training this bunch of nurses and I got to the end of the preamble about what we would be doing and asked if there were any questions.
An angelic smiling face from near the front raised he hand and asked - "Your badge, is it a noun or a verb?"
I went an interesting shade of pink, she got a well deserved laugh and we had a good day.
