Title: Spring Is Coming..........
Post by: mini-thumper on April 14, 2009, 06:48:58 PM
Fellow Thumper Fans
Is it me or has the quality of the drivel on here got better of late? I have thoroughly enjoyed wasting the last forty five minutes of my life picking through all sorts of very interesting, and even informative, bo**ocks.

Keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Uncle Boyd

Talking of drivel, uncle Boyd is back and he's going to explain how four little cylinders and pistons in the same engine constitute a Thumper ???

Well the work of an engine is done on the ignition phase and only one of the little pots fires at a time so one one is doing any work, so it is four thumerettes in one frame?

How is that for starters

Lots of good stuff gets debated here... and a fair amount of drivel  ;)

My favourite high point lately was that picture of the drag queen in response to Steve D's assertion that he could see his trannie outside his house. Every time I see the picture it makes me cringe and then laugh.

BTW, we've missed you Boyd, whereyabin?

There was a bit in Nude Scientist - or was it the daily rag - about internet chat rooms and forums and the quality of the blather on them - apparently (and here is no surprise) it is very dependent on the social awareness and IQ of the posters.  If your site population is made up of people who cannot string two words together, in real life would like to punch everyone in the teeth but are too scared to because they are a wimp or were bullied, you will get a lot of bullying and crass language etc, if you have a bunch of people who can think for themselves, feel empathy for others even though the other is only a computer screen, are happy in their own bodies and mature - as in not feeling the need to punch every one rather than having deep discussions about the balance of trade deficit and the impact on the price of Baravian wheatgerm bread, you will get a different sort of blather.

Taking this all into account I guess our happy band are a bunch of simian half wits with deep rooted psychological bruising from formative encounters with big brothers fists and that our perfect camping weekend would be one beating the seven different shades of pooh out of each other - or as it is camping, GC in his campest gear.

A very interesting hypothesis Rog.

Although I don't wish to apply too broad a brush here, euphemistically speaking one may find the following to be (largely) true.

High performance, multi-cylinder, plastic clad Jap crotch rocket = immature, easily lead, dissatisfied lunatic rider with constant craving for the latest thing.

Low performance, single cylinder, not too shiny, maybe slightly rotten, single cylinder owner = mature, satisfied (usually due to lack of funds!) steady (bugger all performance) rider who appreciates the finer things in life (scenery, beer, good company, primus stoves etc.).

So there we are, it must be true.

Noi idea what I am talking  ??? about and verging on a rant,

Andy ::)

By those definitions I am schizophrenic as I like fast jap crotch rockets (well I did when I was more affluent though not always needing the latest whizzy version) and I am also a real old duffer as I have a tiny 125cc thumper for my main hack and can tick all the boxes for the other prerequisites that Andy lists!!

I think I tend to lean much more to the old duffer stuff now as its cheaper, very necessary as I have 4 little drains on my resources ala the Virgin broadband adverts, but I draw the line at pipe and slippers.

Hmm, having said that I always used to get slippers for Christmas when I was a kid and the memory of the smell of the St Bernard(?) pipe baccy that my headmaster used to use is very nostalgic. Have I been a thumperist from the age of seven then, and just been in denial during my 20's?? Now there is one for the psychiatrists couch...  8)

I'm afraid I know nowt about baccy as I have no interest in it, though the barking that came from Mr Evans' pipe as he stuffed it was always amusing   ;D

Old man used to puff away on one of the things, so we used to have Ogden's St Bruno Rough CUt, Ready Rubbed and Flake tins about the place - I happen to have a Flake tin on the desk at the mo - having sold off the 600th scale Chieftan and Adams tanks that were in it not long back

Aye used to be steady on those things from 19 - 30, you could burn allsorts! ;) Supplement with French, Belgian, Capstan 'Full Strength' or Balkan Sobrani ciggies if you were feeling flush. StBruno wasn't bad, but preferred Black Twist, Walnut plug or similar as they weren't as hot on the tongue as the lighter tobaccos. You don't need to stop for food either!

Still like the aroma of a good pipe baccy, but haven't used a dummy for 25 years now, it's used to maitain 'The Fleet!' ::)

Bye, Bill.

It's funny what reminds you of things. I know someone who kept every single belonging when their mother died, even boxes of bills and junk. I suppose that's what my friend likes to hang on to.

However, on my brother's fridge is my grandmother's fridge magnet bearing her name, Gladys. Every time I see that one thing it brings back all the memories of a lovely, barmy woman.

Having been cursed with chronic sinus problems* it's not smell that that gives me a Proustian remembrance, it's other stuff. I'm a collector of totems, much like my brother and that fridge magnet; single items that invoke a place and time. I have one of those printers blocks on the wall with mementoes in each cubby hole, including far too many broken ends of brake levers, etc. from crashes.

GC

* At the risk of steering this post towards the Rants section, any linking of this comment about my sinus problems to cackling remarks about my snoring will not be appreciated. I'd go so far as to say that anyone making fun of what is becoming a very depressing condition can f*** off.

forgot to say, music is a big memory jogger isn't it?

All I have to hear is the Damned singing 'New Rose' and I'm transported back to an era of bongage trousers, Dunlop Green Flash and being beaten up by skinheads.  ::)

'Night Nurse' by Gregory Issacs always reminds me of a idyllic year with my first live-in girlfriend.

Diana Ross singing 'Chain Reaction' gives me the shivers because it reminds me of working in a nightclub where we were expected to dance on the bar to it at the end of the night ( I kid you not).

Was it Bill Withers who sung 'Lovely day'? Either way, whenever I hear that I'm transported back to the best summer of my youth.

Music is my best memory jogger. Was never one for photo's or keepsakes, but was always listening to the radio. Trouble is, I can never remember titles or artists so I can't look up songs from my past. All I can do is enjoy the moments when i hear a song and a pleasant memory pops in.

So you haven't done that YouTube thing of sitting for hours trawling through old videos of bands you liked?
